To me, this is one of the very first heavy metal rippers… It’s a legendary track, deserves all the recognition in the world.

This is basically the first widely recognized track to be built largely on a galloping distorted pedal tone riff, so your guess is pretty much correct. It went onto become a popular writing device in metal. I'd say where its influence shows up the most is thrash metal. Children of the Grave is commonly called proto-thrash or even the first thrash song ever.

Black Sabbath are the pioneering heavy metal band, so pretty much all subsequent metal derives something from them.

T.I. was the only guitarist in the group Gezzer Butler played the bass like a guitar and added sneaky lines to complement the riffs He also wrote the lyrics ✌️🤘

This is one of Sabbath's finest recordings. Another essential and highly influential Black Sabbath song you need to hear is "Symptom of the Universe" from their Sabotage album.

Regarding gallop: It's one of the first, but Deep Purple (Hard Lovin' Man) and Led Zeppelin (Immigrant Song) did it on albums released a year earlier than the Black Sabbath's debut

Tony often does add 2 tracks of lead. They branch out and converge. Some times with different time feel. In addition we have Geezer following on base, adding his touch to it as well. It all fits together and feels familliar, alien, harmonic and jarring at the same time. I like it.

I have always percived the lyrics as a warning. Are you going to carry the torch? Are you committed to the peace and love movement? Now will you do it?

I was not alive back then, but from my understanding the whole concept of "metal' music wasn't a thing yet around this time. Black Sabbath (and Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin among a couple of others) were some of the influential bands that created/influence the creation what we now know as Heavy Metal (and things like Doom Metal for Black Sabbath). So a lot of these concepts probably didn't really exist before them making their music even though they are very prevalent today.

I appreciate that you acknowledged the "Three Stooges Effect" - that formative things can seem bland in retrospect as a result of saturation. It can absolutely make it difficult to appreciate some things years after the fact. That dual guitar solo bit is just a single guitarist (obviously double-tracked). That's a Tony Iommi special - two solos for the price of one. And I'm glad you noted the percussion on this. Bill Ward is one of my favorite drummers. He sometimes has a jazz or big band feel that I think plays well with some of the heavier, grooving bass from Geezer. Not my favorite Black Sabbath track, but it's a solid one. Excellent critique.

I always assumed the gallops were a take on old gallopades, so maybe in the metal sense this would be the first but in the grand scheme of music? Nah. You'd need to go back at least 100 years for that, maybe closer to 200.
