How the SAS Ended the Peterhead Prison Siege in 1987 | Americans React

Killermcknight

We watched the story of the Special Air Service and the 1987 Peterhead Prison siege, and it’s one of the most intense, high-stakes operations we’ve watched.

The pressure, the risk, and the precision involved are hard to even wrap your head around — and the human side of it (everyone involved, on all sides of the situation) really hits. This isn’t just “action” — it’s a reminder of how quickly a crisis can spiral, and what it takes to bring it to an end.

If you know this case well, what’s the most important detail people usually miss when they talk about the siege and raid?

This one was genuinely gripping — the tension is unreal.
What other UK history / special forces missions (documentaries) should we react to next?

Delta force and the SAS trained together, Delta force put a sign up outside their tent reading "second to none", the SAS put up a sign outside their tent reading "NONE" 😂

The Taliban are out in the desert when a voice shouts "one SAS is better than three Taliban, the Taliban leader sends in three fighters", after about ten minutes a voice shouts "one SAS is better than ten Taliban", the leader sends in ten fighters, after about thirty minutes a voice shouts "one SAS is better than a thousand Taliban", the leader now enraged sends in a thousand fighters, after about an hour one lone Taliban fighter crawls over the hill into the leaders arms and declares "don't send anymore fighters, it's a trap, there's two of them" 😂😂😂

No no no... our bog standard Marine Commandos and Paras are equivalent to SEALs and green berrets.
These guys are two or three tiers above that.

Edit: apparently people don't define the term bog standard the way I do.
1. it comes from the term box standard, meaning special decorated boxed edition of an otherwise off the shelf item.
2. It has come to mean almost the opposite. Not less than, but regular, unadorned, unembelished. If you're fresh off AACC, you're by definition a bog standard Commando, even if you go straight into a SoC unit for further training because you proved you're good enough... you have not done or attained anything more than every other Marine Commando, which is (as the whole point of the comment) a massive deal in itself. A green lid is literally the most basic thing a Marine Commando can acheive, not because it's easy or lots of people can do it, but because without that you AREN'T a Commando. The bog standard achievement for an RMC is more than I'll ever do in my long life, but for an RMC there is no lower rung.

There’s a video on YouTube of the SAS supporting an American unit in Afghan.. How they talk about the SAS just appearing out of nowhere.. they disappear in to the night in small units doing things 200 men couldn’t. Remarkable people.

Worth mentioning that Peterhead in 1987 was to Scotland what Alcatraz or Marion was to the US, where the Worst of the Worst were sent to rot.

The granddaddy of Special Forces invented the Flashbang/stun grenade as a non lethal stun device, now used the world over along with there techniques

A American soldier said if your told the SAS are coming for you then it’s taken as a given that you’ll soon be dead.

I remember being at a company dinner where one of the speakers was the warden of this prison after the riots. His joke was that he couldn’t understand what the prisoner were complaining about, after all they had a bed, three square meals and a roof under their feet.
These guys were the hardest of hard men.

That conversation around 8:00... you will have to react at some point to Porridge. A brilliant sitcom set in a prison. It's not exactly 100% realistic but frequently addresses the prisoner/guard harmony conundrum. And Peterhead was an object example of why it matters.

My brother in law is a retired prison officer. He worked at Stirling prison. He said Ex SAS members now authors Andy McNab and Chris Ryan were regular visitors. They would talk to prisoners especially the younger ones. They would try to get them to channel they're aggression into positive things like Joining the Army or Sport.

You guys should check out the best documentary on an SAS operation ever. It's on youtube with the title, "SAS Iranian Embassy Siege Documentary Operation Nimrod". It covers the siege of the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980, where the Special Air Service was first learned about by the public when their CT team was eventually sent in to rescue the hostages.

It has a ton of actual news footage, interviews with the real people involved, including 3 members of the SAS assault team, the hostages and the police and other personnel who dealt with the situation.
