My nephew had a VHS tape of Blackadder Goes Forth, that he had recorded . He took it on a skiing holiday to Italy in 1990 , and asked if he could play it at the hotel reception area ; some of the staff were British , and they had not seen it. By the time the last episode was playing , the foyer was packed with people from Britain , Italy , France , Germany etc . Every one had been laughing until that last scene ; I looked around that room, full of different nationalities , which had gone silent, and tears were running down all their faces. That was the most powerful poignant moment I have witnessed .😢

I remember watching this the night it first aired back in 1989. It felt like the entire country went silent, too devastated to speak.

Showing the field of poppies at the end is deeply symbolic in the UK. Poppies were the first flowers to grow on the battlefields after the battles. The fact that they grew after the battles is in a famous World War 1 poem. In the UK and the Commonwealth we wear poppies in November up to both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

I was a ‘rebellious teenager’ when I first saw this, but I sat there and cried at the end, while my mum gave me a cuddle, she was sobbing too. It makes me cry every time I watch, time does not diminish the impact. 😢❤

Those are fields of poppies. The poppy is our symbol of remembrance. Lest we forget ❤

It's the line "marry Doris" that gets me every time. a two dimensional minor villain becomes a full person,, with hopes and dreams. he speaks the lost dreams of a generation who were cast aside.

The last line from blackadder where he drops the sarcasm completely and just says good luck everyone he meant it

The entire show - all 4 series - completely pivots on that absolutely heartbreaking line.

The gravity of what actually happened to so many young men hits you at that moment.

Someone more knowledgeable than me noted that Captain Darling has the Distinguished Service Order on his list of medals, which means he did something suicidally heroic before the events of the series. He knows what’s about to happen because he’s already been there. Changes the whole character.
