Finally a Tarzan analysis that:
- Doesn't dismisses Kerchek's character
- Doesn't wave off and actually explains the purpose behind the Phil Collins songs
- Doesn't portray Turk and Tantor as a useless comic relief, and acknowledges their emotional arcs
- Goes into detail about the themes
I could go on.
As you can tell, I'm very salty about a certain crab man's takes on this movie-

Every time I watch the movie I found more things to appreciate about it. The scene where Clayton tells Tarzan to shoot him and "be a man," Tarzan mimics the sound of a gun, and then destroys it, saying he's not a man like Clayton, is among the best in the entire movie.

I came as soon as I heard

52:26 I love that we get to see "civilized" humans learning to speak the gorilla language. I think this might be the only Tarzan adaptation where this happens?

Kerchak in this movie is one of the finest definitions of being a leader to me.
Whenever something threatens his family, he fights on the front lines without hesitation. From saving that baby monkey on the stampede scene, to running straight ahead to Clayton when he attacks his people, while everyone else is running off.
What a boss.

I always felt like people were too hard on Kerchak. I haven’t seen this movie in years and even I remember the major plot points. Kerchak grieving the loss of his baby and just trying to protect his family. And he learned he was wrong.

Christ, if I lost a baby and my partner came in with a new one the next day, I’d be irritated frankly

let's hope the copyright gods don't murder the video this time!!!

I know there are folks who don’t think highly of “You’ll Be in My Heart” (Trey Parker and Matt Stone were petty about it after losing Best Original Song at the Oscars), but the fact that Phil Collins originally wrote it for his daughter makes it a lot more poignant and beautiful.

I’ve always wondered can you divorce an iconic character like Tarzan from author who created him awful beliefs , but stories outlive their creators and change over time like Georgia of the  jungle .

We always rag on Disney for dumbing down classic tales, but in this case I think they improved upon the source material.

I especially love how unmistakable your thumbnails are. No matter when or how im scrolling at night or how fast i go i can always make out one of your new videos at a glance. I dont know how you do it. It's masterful graphic design. Simple and Clean as a certain other disney affiliated property would put it.

I always liked Clayton as a villain. He's one of the few diseny villains that doesnt really "break" in his final momemts. Most of the others panic or meltdown when they're defeated but Clayton kept on going till the end. You could argue that's what caused his defeat with the vines.

I’m so sick of creators being forced to censor their work. This is not children’s YouTube. I know it’s because brands don’t like it but like we aren’t fucking stupid.

This was the first piece of media in my childhood that introduced me to the idea of human relatedness to apes.

I'm kinda disappointed we won't be getting A Goofy Movie video because there's always something to chew on in that film, but that's my fault for constantly forgetting it isn't technically part of the canon😂

Anyway, great video! Tarzan is one of my personal comfort movies. Perfect? Maybe not. But growing up on the autistic spectrum made having a story that told me that being the odd one out in my group doesn't mean I don't belong there or that there aren't others like me was, in retrospect, kinda life saving.

"Not a man like YOU!" is one of those lines that just live in my head rent free, both for the performance and the message in it.

Here's looking forward to the next vid!

George of the Jungle is such a great movie, I can't wait until my kids are old enough for it.

The practice of weaving song melodies into the underscore is a practice that goes at least as far back as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the use of "You'll Be In My Heart" as Tarzan visits the treehouse as an adult, led by a harp over synths (and then strings), is right up there with using "Feed the Birds" as Mr. Banks walks to the bank at night in "Mary Poppins" in terms of complete devastation.

Also interesting is how light/dark symbolism is reversed in this movie. Darkness is associated with shelter and deep emotional moments while the light is associated with exposure. Both villains are also yellow (but then again, Jane also dresses in yellow...)

Fun fact, this is not the first Tarzan movie Glenn Close was in. In Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Jane was played by Andie MacDowell in her first film role, but due to her being from South Carolina, she had a thick southern accent, and Glenn Close voiced over all her lines.

"oh man I need a YouTube video to watch while eating"

The humble and philosophical werothegoat:
