I actually like that they are enjoying the snow at the end because Santa is sharing a piece of the culture with them so they can see it done properly, like supporting indigenous businesses

I think we can say Jack Skellington is the first anti-hero in Disney.

Rip Catherine O Hara :(

My headcanon about Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day towns is that Thanksgiving town is a village of pilgrim turkeys and Valentine's Day town is a city of cherubs working for Cupid.

EVERYONE SHUT UP MY SHOW’S ON!!🗣️

One minute of silence to the great Ken Page (Oogie Boogie) for helping to make such a incredible character and villain... We miss you😢😢.

36:21 ...oh my god, Jack is a Silicon Valley tech bro.
"What if trains, but better because no poors?"
"What if money, but better because no government?"
"What if art, but better because no humans?"

There is a degree to which mention of ed sheeran is now EXTREMELY FUNNY

To be clear, Tim Burton is indeed a cultural appropriationist. Gothicism got started in late 18th-century England, at about the same time as Orientalism, and for roughly the same reasons. Gothicism was basically Northern Europeans appropriating the past of their own medieval ancestors, whom - like Asians - they looked down upon as superstitious and vaguely barbaric. Ironically, this attitude came from the cultural Left, not the Right: liberal Britons viewed Asian culture as despotic and the Catholic feudal culture of the Middle Ages as hopelessly old-fashioned and bigoted. The Right, meanwhile, was trying to earnestly preserve that same "savage" medieval culture, not ironically mine it for entertainment purposes. Conservatives didn't really start looking down on other cultures until the 19th-century age of imperialism, when colonialist greed replaced aristocratic elitism as the primary right-wing vice.

All that said, I don't think you can really call Jack Skellington a colonialist or imperialist. He genuinely loved Christmas and struggled to understand it (though, strangely enough, he never realized it was a religious holiday). He was wrong to kidnap and imprison Santa Claus and take his place, but I think that had much more to do with his own egotism than with a condescending attitude toward Christmas. And Halloween people are technically the "minority" here, because their holiday is far less popular than Christmas. People have tried to censor Halloween customs far more than they've tried to censor Christmas customs.

Love the analogy you did this time, I kinda now want to make a cover of "What's this" where Cortez is just discovering Tenochtitlan.

I love how I can never tell what the topic will be for these

Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favourite movies, Jack Skellington was one of my first husbandos, and I personally saw the movie about someone dealing with burn out

14:27 remember: Grinch was created because Seuss hated the Materialisted Christmas, or how I like to call "Buystmas"

on the limits of Tim Burton’s awareness about appropriation I think the corpse bride, based on Jewish folklore but including a church, is part of it also

6:23 Also, it takes away from genuine math achievement by East Asian people.  If an East Asian person is genuinely good at math and accomplishes something in math, a white person might say “of course he succeeded in math.   It’s just because he’s Asian.”

I wonder if there's a door for Ramadan in that forest.

I disagree that jack and oogie boogie are not foils. They both cause harm to Santa Claus, but jack does it out of innocent fascination and Oogie has fun torturing him and literally treating his life as something to gamble on. he doesn’t see value in Christmas at all- like another school of colonizers

38:23 Can we talk about how Lock Shock & Barrel kidnap the Easter Bunny and we never find out what happened to him? Did they throw the Easter Bunny into Oogie Boogie's dungeon? Where is the Easter Bunny?!

"Jack's skull is so far up his own coccyx" made me pause the video, I was wheezing with laughter.

35:51 Native here. I don't remember where I heard this, but someone compared a headdress to a Purple Heart, and I think that's a better comparison. Crowns have become commodified in a way that doesn't "read" properly. Meanwhile, a headdress is a military signifier like a Purple Heart and carries some of the right baggage, even if the exact meaning isn't 1:1. The comparison exists to help people understand the level of sacredness. If you wouldn't wear a Purple Heart - because you understand stolen valor - you shouldn't wear a headdress for similar reasons.
