i have not been able to watch through a single one of the dreamhouse adventure movies. i want my whimsy back

5 stars for the barbie diaries but only 3 for barbie of swan lake is diabolical 😭

i WISHHH they continued the streak they were on with the fashion fairytale era, it was different but it felt modern without taking away from the story and impact UGHH LOVE BARBIE

"If you`re ever in need of an evil regent, Tim Curry is your man" aged very horribly very quickly.

Rest in peace :(

the magic of pegasus deserved more than 3 stars💔

18:37 RIP Tim curry

I'm definitely not one of those old people who claim that everything was better when they were young but...in this case it really was better when I was young.
My biggest problem with the new movies is that everything has this extremely sanitized image with "relatable normal girl" branding which Mattel equates to boring clothes and no whimsy anywhere. No plot, no action, nothing of anything really. Despite also being colorful visually, the vibes it gives me is "sad beige mom". Everything feels neutral, sanitized and flavorless.
They are so focused on being relatable and inclusive that they forget about whimsy dreamy fantasy. Little kids want to dream big, not watch a normal girl doing normal stuff. You can be inclusive while still being whimsical. (One good execution is the prosthetic fin!)
You don't have to make Barbie average and regular to be relatable. The Princess Barbies and the Fairy barbies had relatable personalities as well.
Of course I could simply ignore new releases and just rewatch the old stuff, but I am genuinely worried about how this boring format impacts the new generation.

I think some people don’t realize that we see disability representation in fairytopia, Elina is the only person with out wings, she cannot fly/travel like the others can

The Barbie movies from 2001 to 2014 were something else. But maybe it's because I get hit with so much nostalgia whenever I see those movies. Charm school, Mariposa, princess end the pauper and fashion secret were just incredible. Barbie life in the dream house was also my favourite Barbie series.

Me: I have short attention span
Youtube: Here's an hour long video about Barbie movies

Me asf: GET INTO IT!!!!

How did she go from looking like the doll in the early 2000s to… that? The modern version. Dear God😭

You can tell when the movies were bringing original ideas vs when they were copying pop culture trends.

Their pop-star/musical  movies align with Hannah Montana and Disney channel musicals. Their superhero movies align with Marvel popularity. Their charm school movies align with Harry Potter. The video game movie aligns with Minecraft and Roadblox.

The great thing about the first 2 eras is that they are creating a new market and interest,  not following other pop culture .

Unpopular opinion: I always really enjoyed The Princess & The Popstar because the songs were good fun, but mainly because the plot focuses primarily on the friendship between the girls instead of the romance like in The Princess & The Pauper

11:54 I’m walking down the aisle to the theme of Barbie 12 dancing princesses!!! I’m so excited 😆😆😆😆

12 Dancing Princesses is so close to my heart as the first Barbie movie I remember me and grandma lovd this movie a lot.

P.S. The dance pavillion is modeled after the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco

41:25 "Chelsea spends the whole movie worrying about her dance competition, but at no point do we see her trying to rehearse, even though she keeps saying that's what she needs to do"

Chelsea is my spirit animal

What I really am missing from modern Barbie that was quintessential to the first era of the movies is how they fostered an appreciation for the arts. Ballet, painting, music, classic stories, and plays. Figure skating, even. Its something that I don't think should ever go out of style yet its not really present recently.

I will not hear any slander on my love Swan Lake!! Pretty sure I ran that VHS tape into oblivion lol. Swan Lake became my favorite ballet because of that movie. The music is incredible and the story is gripping! And I was so obsessed with the doll, she had light-up wings and a stunning sparkly gown!

The reason why the Dreamhouse era had an entirely new canon was because it was following the Barbie vlogs that started debuting on YouTube in 2015. The Barbie vlogs is the precursor to Dreamhouse Adventures.

55:25 The answer to this is that unfortunately around 2013/14 Barbie hit the worst point in sales in her entire history, because around this time, the criticisms of her being an inappropriately dressed bimbo just for being glamorous and feminine peaked and parents weren’t buying too much of her anymore. That’s why in 2015 they introduced the “Millie” face for the dolls that you brought up, which happens to have no makeup on whatsoever. They shifted towards this completely opposite aesthetic ditching the focus on hyper-feminine fashion to instead infantilize her as much as possible. And you’re right, Barbie dolls have once again not been selling very well for the last couple years she’s had this aesthetic, because like you said kids don’t tend to gravitate towards wanting to play being an average person, who would of thought? It’s honestly really sad to me, since I feel like they got rid of everything that made Barbie feel whimsical, unique and special and ironically the Live-Action Barbie movie proved that people do enjoy her hyper-feminine aesthetic but unfortunately Mattel seems determined to not rebrand her again and to keep ignoring what the fans want, for the time being. 😢

I don’t hate the Dreamhouse Adventures universe, I do enjoy it (tho not as much as the movies made before 2015) but like you said, I’m tired and at this point I feel like every movie being set in it DOES hugely limit the story-telling. 🫠

This was a great video by the way, I love whenever I find people who enjoy Barbie movies like I do, I hope you do more girly-media centered content in the future! 💖
