Rhodesia disappeared in 1980. You can still buy its army patches. How did a white minority state in southern Africa become a country the modern far right can't stop mourning?
To understand the flag, you need to know what it flew over. We're following the story from Cecil Rhodes and a mining concession used to take a country, through the land laws and job reservations that protected white settlers, to Ian Smith's government and the Zimbabwean movements fighting for their country back.
Then we follow the sales pitch. Rhodesia's government presented white minority rule as the defence of Western civilization against communism. That story recruited American mercenaries, found friends in Congress, and helped turn demands for land, wages, and a vote into an alleged foreign conspiracy. Soldier of Fortune, the Crippled Eagles, and the American white power movement carried parts of it home.
The story continues through Zimbabwe's independence, the land settlement at Lancaster House, Mugabe's Gukurahundi massacres, and the very different Western responses to murdered civilians and seized white-owned farms. It reaches the present through Rhodesian nostalgia, far-right merchandise, and the politics of white grievance.
There's a question you can take out of this history and use elsewhere: what did these people want before the foreign sponsors showed up?
