stop calling it green, it's clearly yellow 😭

in an interview, Kane Parsons definitely made the link between the environment of the backrooms and the current media landscape, saying both exist as "an infinite amount of information, none of it useful."

Few YouTube video essays have posed a question as horrifying as "When you scroll, what are you looking for?"

I'd add that being "lost in the backrooms" is an inversion of the feeling of being "lost in the woods" in that everything looks basically the same in all directions. Except when lost in the woods, you're seeking civilization; while when lost in the backrooms, you're cut off from and seeking nature (or natural reality). Which does lend into the idea that it's a modern, urban/suburban pressure point given how those aspects of society are also so inherently disconnected with nature.

A failed architect sells cheap furniture for homes he’ll never get to design.

this video made me realize that google ruining youtube search is was completely on purpose, because they want you to scroll endlessly with no specific video in mind, not search for the thing you know you want to watch. they want to make the choice for you.

there's something about a guy who wanted to design buildings but ends up selling furniture

There is something unsettling about watching a video essay on societal decay and the advance of warped consumer culture only for that very video essay to be interrupted by a Shein advert.

It's like describing the color yellow to someone who's never seen it and asking them to make a 10/10 video essay about it ✋👴🤚

The liminal feeling of hearing you say green

Younger people are drastically getting what the actual 80s/90s/early 00s looked like VS what popular media wants you to remember these times as. The therapist office doesn't look disgustingly uncanny or creepily nostalgic. It just looks like a memory of a memory of my early life. This is one of the few pieces of media that I think genuinely got the artistic and aesthetic depiction of late 90s / early 00s reality. A reality before common Internet aesthetics. Aesthetics that came with a common understanding without an easily accessible common community. . . As compared to today

Have you ever been in "backstage" of a large shopping mall? It's completely empty, monotonous, confusing, almost endless, everything looks cheap and practically deserted. Getting lost there is quite scary.

Aside from saying the Backrooms are green, this is one of the best video essays I've ever seen.

I used to work in a mall at a kiosk as a seasonal employee. I had to leave after all the doors were locked, through a nondescript beige door next to a Dave & Buster’s. The hallway that lead outside… it always felt too long. And it was only lit sporadically because, well, it wasn’t designed to be pleasant or soothing. It was designed, literally, to be a transition from one place to another. It was unsettling to not be able to see the door that you knew was there until you were mere feet from it. You always had the feeling that maybe one day, the hallway just… wouldn’t end.

21:52 - "When we realize all this, are we willing to try to change, or is the real horror that maybe, 'I like it in here' ". WOOF. - @ThomasFlight, I love all your videos, like every one, but the writing and editing on this one is really hitting. So well done!

In a way Stalker and Annihilation are like The Backrooms; realms with no way out, where things look superficially normal, but on closer inspection appear to be strange and surreal. People get lost, not only physically, but psychologically as well.

I used to work in the UW medical center. Infinite hallways, weird dead ends, a maze of stairs, that one elevator that would get stuck regularly. One time, the elevator stopped and the poor guy with me freaked out.  I just called and the operator was like "again?"

I get why people get freaked out by these spaces.  There's a dystopian hellscape attached to the endless maze of uncaring architecture

i shed a tear when i heard the Caretaker in the movie and Boards of Canada at the end credits, both are my favorite musicians ever.

An empty office space without a monster becomes more dangerous than a forest of wild animals. You dont know whats ahead, you're feeling the fear of being lost, trapped and falling all at once. Its not even like trying to navigate an alien base but more like trying to navigate a royal palace as silently as possible. A space so unfamiliar and big and you cant get caught.

Yo, I think you might be color blind.  It's not life threatening, but you might be.
