National Security, Ecosystem Collapse & Building Resilience | Rupert Read | Love & Rage 2026

Extinction Rebellion (XR) UK

How prepared is the UK for the security risks created by biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse?

Professor Rupert Read opens Extinction Rebellion’s Love & Rage 2026 weekend with a talk on the UK’s National Security Assessment on Global Biodiversity Loss and Ecosystem Collapse, what it says about the risks facing Britain, and why campaigners are calling for the full assessment to be published.

Read, an environmental philosopher and director of the Climate Majority Project, explores the implications of ecological breakdown for food security, water, flooding, extreme heat and other critical systems. He argues that the growing risks make strategic adaptation and community resilience increasingly important — from food and flood resilience to greener, better-prepared towns and cities.

He also reflects on his time with Extinction Rebellion, the relationship between XR’s “radical flank” and broader climate movements, and what role XR could play as public concern about climate and ecological risks develops.

The talk is followed by a wide-ranging audience Q&A covering climate communication, hope and agency, local resilience, movement strategy, international cooperation and the campaign for publication of the full National Security Assessment.

Topics include:
• The National Security Assessment on biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse
• Calls for publication of the full assessment
• UK food and critical-system resilience
• Strategic adaptation and community resilience
• The Climate Majority Project
• Extinction Rebellion’s future role
• Communicating severe climate risks without creating paralysis
• Radical and moderate approaches within the climate movement

For us, this session goes to the heart of Tell The Truth: people need clear information about the risks ahead and a meaningful say in how we prepare for them.

We are a UK community of concerned climate-conscious citizens who Rebel for all Life — using non-violent direct action (NVDA) to advocate for Truth, Justice and the protection of all life, and to help create a future decided with us, not for us.

The governments of the world are literally killing us with their dishonesty and cowardice. There is no political future for any politician. We are rushing headlong to extinction now and the politicians are pretending its not happening and that we will continue with our delusional perpetual growth economics on a dying planet. Capitalism killed us. Unbridled, unregulated capitalism killed us. The politicians killed us. Big oil and the Arabs killed us. Billionaires and their lifestyle of extraction and never having enough, killed us.

years ago I got aware of XR after Greta initiated her protest and called to panic. Todays politicians try to smooth the waves still. After I lived as most out of the baby boomer generation did, but received some information about the dire threat we are to be in in the not too far future in the seventies from the german science educator Hoimar von Dithfurth I remembered this again. At first I thought the name of the movement would be some kind of activist's exaggeration. After some new research about this in the media I got more and more alarmed and now take the name as a valid description of what we need to be aware by now.

Still waiting for environmental organizations to become anti-imperialist. Watch Abby Martin's "Earth's Greatest Enemy". In fact, maybe you should interview her.

technology is the only reason there's so many of us, as Gaia systems fail, technology will be mandatory for each individual to stay alive, nature will no longer support human life by itself

Not many people there. People don't give a xxxx. Let it all go to pot. If so few care, why worry? Nihilism maybe, but my life experience has proved that 99% just don't care. I realised this 40 years ago. I learned about the greenhouse effect in 1979. People don't care. I've been greener and more concerned than the 99% but they just don't care. I don't care anymore. Let humanity extinctify itself. Why not? We're psychopathic.

Question...would the UK be better off if it was still in the,EU?

Its a strange universal moment in the Great Interegnum. The delusionary rap of the far right playbook is doubled down on as reality bites deep. Here in Aotearoa-NZ we have general elections for the next 3 year term of government. In USA the Midterms also this November. Meanwhile positive democratic reforms like citizen juries & assemblies, universal basic income, top.line as well as bottom line income thresholds, land & capital as well as income and expenditure taxation are the seed polices waiting to be watered when that steamboat whistle blows.
