I hate the fact that we can have a pretty in-depth video like this about theory in Turf but the game has no real way to test the ideas and hone skills because there isn't any real matchmaking for it. It's led to a downward spiral of "the mode isn't serious" -> less people play -> match quality goes down -> "this mode isn't serious". I think we need a ranked queue more than anything for this mode tbh

When they kill the gold aerospray, Turf War will become a better place.

Thanks for the video! Turf War definitely deserves more attention.

I think you left out one major advantage to a mid-game push: you acquire scattered drops of ink in the enemy base, because most weapons do not fully cover turf. It's just not worth the time to clean up the last few points here and there, so they effectively become permanent. But those points do add up. Net result: teams that don't do early pushes are playing from behind at the endgame.

I’ve always felt like the ratio between mistakes and recoveries is out of whack in turf because of the time based objective. In ranked, a series of mistakes will result in a KO or at least a very strong score from the enemy which you must retaliate by punishing more of their mistakes and making fewer of your own. In turf, if you make a bunch of mistakes in succession, I feel like the retaliation is much less demanding on average as most of the time there is only one fight or push (for lack of a better word) that you need to execute to win the game at the end. I’m curious what you think about this dynamic.

I do agree on the subject of map control, turf provides a very interesting perspective on map control that I think I would otherwise quite enjoy if it weren’t for things like the aforementioned mistake ratio, as well as the queue for solo online turf being genuinely terrible for a number of reasons.

Wow I’m in that video! And getting destroyed

12:13  You haven't understood the concept described in this part of the video. Gem's analogy isn't a narrative, it's an accurate, objective observation. You're wrongly assuming that he said nothing matters before the last 20-30 seconds and ignoring the actual concept.

The concept is differentiating between permanent score vs dynamic score.

Dynamic score can be taken back by the other team, so whatever you gain is temporary.

Permanent score is something you gain that can never be taken away. It's a new water level that establishes a new line for the other team to beat if they are going to win. You can change your strategy after this point with the new information in play.

I point this out in hopes of raising the bar of quality for Splatoon content for the community, otherwise it's a good, interesting, and thought-provoking video!

A player coach? Pardon?

Turf War is kind of just a bad Clam Blitz where you only really get to push once at a predetermined time. Turning the game's main resource into an objective does no favours to it either as a resource or as an objective.
