Do you know someone who doesn't use their degree?

Do not sleep on Community College, it's still much more reasonable and, at least in my state, all State colleges accept the credits in transfer.

My 21 year old son did not want to go to college right away. I was worried. But he got a job at a major grocery chain at 16 and has now been there 5 years. He is now working as a PIC or Person in Charge, he’s going to school and the company is fully paying for it for him to move up and he started a 401k. I’m really proud of him! And no college debt.

Best advice I gave my daughter at 13 - she came to and said that her career choice is Paleontology - before i said anything I told her to do a few days research on salary ranges and their future outlooks. She came back said she wanted to be in the medical field - 12 years later she is a Surgical Physician Assistant and a $200,000 salary range in NY.

I'm a Nurse.  It's not the best job but I make $80k working twice a week, 24 hours.

Once my professor said 60-precent of us (students) will have careers that have nothing to do with our degrees. And this was in the 1980s!

TRADE SCHOOL..... BECAUSE COLLEGE IS A DEBT TRAP.

This why people should start at a community college so you don't ruin your life financially for a career change.

Watching stories like this really shows how much has changed. A college degree can still be valuable, but it’s no longer a guarantee of a stable career or financial security. More people are realizing that practical skills, adaptability, and careful planning matter just as much as formal education.

When I graduated from college with a Biology Degree, the college DEAN told all of my 40 classmates at an end-of-year meeting that our degree was useless unless we specialized with a master's degree. This was 1971 and the BA degree WAS useless, until it helped me breezed through Nursing school twenty-five years later.

Who could have guessed that 17 year-olds aren't the best judges of their future career paths? Oh, that's right, the older people preying on them.

When everyone is special, no one is special.

Employers increasingly don't care what your degree is in, just that you have one. It's basically a high school diploma now; it's just expected. I have a degree in psychology - unanimously hailed as the most useless - and I make 6 figures as a Quality Specialist at a major tier one manufacturer

3:09 we need far more job shadowing in high school so students know the job before getting into college.

Another negative factor in this endless list of reasons for youth joblessness is that students are CHEATING. Assignments, papers, take-home exams are AI written... with the consequence that students do graduate and they are utterly unqualified and incompetent.

Roughly 60%of graduates do not work in the field they majored in.

To this day, college is one of my biggest regrets. I wanted to be a Massage Therapist since I was 14 years old after finding a book about it. My father was appalled and told me that I had to go to college if I wanted to make anything of myself and if I wanted his financial assistance. At 18 I went to a university. It was an absolute nightmare and a waste of time and money.  Thankfully I developed a fair amount of gumption and dropped out 6 months later in 2006. I went to massage school soon after...10 months total at $19,000 in tuition. This is my 18th year in the field and I could not be happier. I make close to 6 figures (knock on wood) and I absolutely love what I do for a living. Trade schools are a phenomenal option. Love the videos btw. 👍👍

Unfortunately even the “good” degrees are struggling these days.

We’re a year into this and I’m helping a 23 year old Mechanical Engineering Grad find his first engineering job.

The dude is highly competitive for his background but is still struggling on even getting a job offer in the entry level engineering.

Edit: Highly competitive as in, he has formal training in MEP trades with nationally recognized certs/licenses, and is still struggling to land an entry level engineering job.

Thats how bad the job market is.

In 1977 when I was 18 I hosted a talk show on WRNG radio in Atlanta, and the topic was "Is college worth it?" I didn't feel it was for me way back then and for many, I still don't feel it is now. Certainly, for some professions such as legal, medical, dental, and certain sciences, it is if you are directed and know what you want to do with your life, but for me, I felt it was not.

In 1975 when I was 16 and already working in radio, I was tutoring college students at the University of Maryland on how to pass the then-required FCC exams. I'm now 67, have worked 51 years in the media and never took any kind of broadcasting or journalism course. I did take meteorological courses to get a certificate in broadcast meteorology, as most of my career was as a television meteorologist, but that was done once I was already in the industry and had my career path charted. Maybe others should consider doing the same? Now, if I can still step down at my age, I'll get off my soapbox. Thanks for reading.

I dropped out of HS. Work about 6 hours a day making on average $3500 a week installing doors. No debt !!
