I lived in small health, a few years ago and like most inner city urban areas, mostly decent people just trying to survive and a few prats.

That Saj fella seemed sound. Good people.

Most of those cafes you went past earlier are Somalian/Arab cafes, but they dont sell like posh restuarant style food/cuisines, they do survival food for factory workers like massive omlettes or huge dhal portions with 14inch nan/parantha's, and gigantic tea's. Their teas are actually very good and very distinct (the Karak Chai with Cinamon sprinkled on it) - Al Aruba Cafe is open 24hrs, 7 days a week, 365 days, so if you're on a bender on Christmas Eve and its 4:30am on Christmas Morning, thats the place to go. I deny everything.
Also i only found out recently, the Somalian language is very similar to Arabic, and their culture/food is also very similar to Arabs.

If you want to try proper African "Cuisine" though, there's a place called Afrikaana in Balsall Heath - Church Road/Ladypool Road, mostly flame grilled steaks and meaty stuff, i havent tried it but ive been inside, the aroma's from that place are mouth watering, the atmosphere is very authentic - and I've been told the food is 10/10. Its like another world inside there.
