Living in a Van in Britain — Is It Actually Legal?
There is no law in Britain against living in a van. But there are a dozen ways the state can move you on, fine you, or seize the vehicle entirely, and every one of them depends on the land you're parked on. On 29 June 2026 the Vagrancy Act of 1824 was finally repealed in England and Wales. For two centuries it treated people lodging "in any cart or waggon" as rogues and vagabonds. In this documentary we walk through what's actually left. We cover parking orders and penalty charges on public roads, and the wave of council car park and seafront bans from Lincoln to North Yorkshire. We look at the Hastings vehicle-sleeping ban that collapsed, and the Section 60C offence that can see your home impounded. We explain why owning a field doesn't let you live on it, and why Scotland's famous right to roam stops at the van door.
