In this video, I begin the third and final layer of planking on Temptress using a completely new CAD-driven workflow to produce pre-cut hull planks.
Rather than creating traditional patterns by hand, I use the boat's 3D CAD model to unwrap each plank into a flat pattern before machining it on the CNC router. It's an experimental process, and I genuinely don't know how well it will work—but if successful, it could significantly reduce the time required to build a modern wooden boat while maintaining a precise fit.
Along the way I refine the process, overcome a few setbacks, and fit the very first Utile planks that will define the finished appearance of the hull.
🔧 What’s covered:
Beginning the third and final hull planking layer
Creating flat plank patterns from a 3D CAD model
CNC machining finished hull planks
Book matching utility planks
Improving the re sawing process
Solving CAD and machining challenges
First fit of the finished hull planking
