Is the Sony FX5 actually worth upgrading to from the FX3?

After owning the Sony FX3 for more than two years as a professional cinematographer, I sold it and upgraded to the new Sony FX5. In this video, I break down why the FX3 was one of the best investments I’ve made in my filmmaking business, how much rental revenue it generated, and why I ultimately decided the FX5 made more sense for my commercial cinematography workflow.

I cover the biggest Sony FX5 vs FX3 differences, including the FX5’s professional menu system, monitoring and output options, Open Gate recording, X-OCN LT, image quality, color, and how it fits alongside the Sony BURANO as a B-camera.

I also compare real FX5, FX3, and BURANO footage and explain why image quality actually isn’t the biggest reason I upgraded. For me, the FX5 is primarily a workflow, confidence, and longevity upgrade designed to work better on professional commercial sets with larger crews.

If you’re considering buying the Sony FX5, upgrading from an FX3, or trying to decide which Sony cinema camera makes the most sense for professional filmmaking, hopefully this gives you a practical perspective from someone actually using these cameras on paid productions.

Sony cameras for the most part are just reliable. Using one has it's advantages. Whether others want to believe it or not, I have benefitted from using Sony cameras in that way by getting opportunities simply because I use Sony. The trust factor is very important.

Could not agree more on the trust factor. It truly can make or break a booking. Producers have enough people to answer to on a project. When they see Sony, it brings a sigh of relief.

Great vid. Same reasons I pre-ordered. Protip, the best place to pre-order an FX5 is Hot Rod Cameras, they are the only dealer who really communicates when a pre-order is shipping. Been shopping with them for 9 years and they answer the phone! I'll never go back to B&H, Adorama or Amazon.

Looking forward to the FX5 for RAW and open gate. It will fit into my workflow, and as a bonus, people are comfortable paying to rent my Sony cameras already. When I had the pyxis 12k, people would literally request I use Sony cameras because the slog footage can mix easily with other Sony cameras. Thanks for the video Joe!

Looking forward to seeing your journey with the fx5 and how it competes demand wise to the burano.

If only it was designed as a small box form camera, with proper ports and not like a hybrid looking camera

Wow, love the way you set up your camera. Just curious, what's that cool mini light diffuser that you've mounted on your cam at 3:26?

For me A7IV works well. 10 bits color and 4k resampled from 7k sensor. Almost same image than FX3 if you know how to light your shoot and color grade your work. I shoot music videoclips, commercials and often social media content.

I prefer the look of the FX5 over the Burano. Makes the talent look more alive.

Thank you for that look!
Did you sell the FX3 on a platform or private buyer?
The amount you got seems more than fair.

100% on Sony being the better choice for it's trust over other brands. I went with the Lumix for my personal camera and have kicked myself ever since, as it makes you a harder sell to the industry when hiring, as they ALL seem to love Sony.

I don't have a Venice or Burano but I still want the FX5😃. But I'll be responsible and save up for it next year.

Would really like to have a real world feedback from your crew as well 🥷 Solid review, keep up 🙏

Feels like this is a reason to buy an FX5 in 12 months time when it’s possible to shoot non-raw open gate. Sony’s model seems to be to intentionally disappoint so they can continue to sell FX3/FX6 without dropping their price much.

Please tell me the lut/grade you used on the shot with the lady in the blue jeans and white tank top.

OG lumix S1 shooter here, and I'm also shooting open gate yet always eyeballed
