This is not a spec-sheet comparison. I take the Sony FX5 into real-world situations to see how its image quality, dynamic range, autofocus, low-light performance, and workflow hold up when making cinematic films.

The footage was edited and graded in DaVinci Resolve. If you are considering the Sony FX5 for documentary filmmaking, commercial work, travel films, or cinematic content, this review will help you decide whether it is the right upgrade for your camera kit.

Awesome video! I found it really interesting that you showed the Sony RAW workflow. Shooting RAW at just 450 Mbps is incredibly cool! The Nikon ZR shoots in RED RAW format at around 1560 Mbps—a 500GB card only lasts me 35 minutes, which is pretty brutal. It was also super interesting to see you point out the software bugs; I think this is definitely a camera I’ll pick up in the future. One more thing: regarding your comment about needing new lenses for the Nikon ZR—there’s an adapter available (Megadap ETZ21 PRO). If you have that, you can use literally any Sony E-mount lens, and the autofocus works just like it does on a Sony. So, I still have my Sony a7S III with all my Sony lenses, but I use the ZR as my "cine cam" for important jobs where I really want to shoot RAW. It’s an awesome setup if you ever want to try it out. I also noticed something about the Sony RAW workflow: if I understood correctly, every shot is stored in a separate folder. That’s not the case with the ZR and RED RAW; instead, you get a folder containing a sort of proxy video that’s generated during export. This lets you preview each shot in the folder before dragging it onto the timeline—kind of like how it works with JPEG and RAW photos. Great video!

Man- that October 2027 Firmware is rough - definitely no need to rush into it if you already have a camera your shooting with !

Thank you so much for your work! As an aspiring filmmaker it’s inspirational. While the fx5 is out of my budget and apparently on significant back order my plan is to purchase the fx30 while it’s on sale and try to build a portfolio. When you discussed your on the go setup you mentioned always carrying a small light. Do you have a recommendation for which light is best?

A very matter-of-fact, practical overview of the new FX5!
The results look really good, but I think I’ll stick with my FX3.
It doesn't feel like a finished product; it feels like being a beta tester.
RAW footage is fantastic, of course, but given current high storage prices, it’s a real luxury.
The lack of an internal ND filter is also disappointing at this price point.
The larger display is the only genuinely useful upgrade. All in all, it’s essentially an FX3 with a bit of a makeover.

Can you connect an external SSD to record RAW footage?

The Nikon ZR and every Z mount camera takes Sony E-mount with auto focus and everything working perfectly. You just have to buy the megadap adapter and it’s even weather sealed 27:18

Cool video! FYI in resolve wanted to mention if you use the media browser inside Resolve you can view the folder structure as a list of clips and import through that panel vs the standard import. Worth a look! This will also allow you to view clips too before import.

Just a quick correction: you can use Sony E-mount lenses with the Nikon ZR :-) ... There is an adapter that converts the Nikon Z mount to Sony E-mount. That is why Sony E-mount lenses can also be used on the RED Komodo X with a Nikon Z mount.

With regard to autofocus in the dark, I think a lot has to do with the colors. I shoot a lot in LED lights, and when there's not much green I've noticed it struggles on my A7IV. I haven't done a full test of the spectrum but red doesn't seem to work well with my A7IV's autofocus. There is an IR focus assist in it, and I think that helps, I don't know if the FX5 has it.

Either way, I think the colors that the sensor sees matters.
