The Tata Group is not just another corporate empire. From salt and steel to software, hotels, cars and trucks, it is woven into India’s economy — and into India’s idea of corporate trust.
But today, that trust is facing one of its biggest tests.
A bitter power struggle has erupted between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, the controlling shareholder of Tata Sons. At the centre of the fight are questions over Tata Sons’ proposed listing, its long-running discussions with the Reserve Bank of India, the role of Tata Trusts, the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran, and whether the group followed its own governance rules.
Indian Express reporting has revealed that Tata Trusts, which holds 66% of Tata Sons, was allegedly kept in the dark for years over critical discussions with the RBI. The conflict intensified after the Tata Sons board voted to proceed with listing and approved a fresh five-year extension for N Chandrasekaran, despite opposition from Noel Tata.
So, who really controls Tata? What is Article 121? Why does this boardroom battle matter beyond Bombay House? And what does it mean for one of India’s most trusted business groups?
In this episode of The Indian Express, Sayoni Aiyar breaks down the Tata vs Tata battle — the law, the money, the power struggle, and the crisis of trust inside India’s most iconic corporate house.
