7 Movies So Disturbing They're Hard To Recommend

From brutal true story inspired horror to controversial exploitation cinema, these are films that push disturbing subject matter and violent imagery to the limit. But being disturbing doesn’t mean a film is meaningless.

In this video, I’m looking at seven films and explore what makes them is difficult to watch, the deeper meanings behind them, and where meaningful provocation crosses into shock for shocks sake.

What’s the most disturbing film you’ve ever watched? Let me know in the comments.

Films discussed
00:00 Intro
01:21 The Girl Next Door
03:59 Bad Boy Bubby
06:43 MEN
09:17 Men Behind The Sun
12:02 The Passion Of The Christ
15:32 Ken Park
18:02 Deadgirl
21:42 Outro

I’m always surprised to never see Snowtown on lists like this.

Most of the films you recommend I will probably not watch, honestly. But you're reviews are thoughtful and fascinating, and I enjoy your analysis of the deeper issues.

My grandma lived very close to where the Sylvia Lykins murder happened. She was a little bit older than Sylvia but was similar in age. What happened to Sylvia really disturbed her and she’d bring up years later how much it still bothered her.

'Come And See' is the most disturbing film I've ever seen

Girl Next Door was written by Jack Ketchum. If you read his books it was apparent no one hated women more than that guy

Bro, new sub here. I've been Into extreme and disturbing films since I was a teen, I've never heard anyone talk about eyes of my mother, based off your previous recommendation, I watched it last night. It was dark, it was brutal, it was beautiful. Some shots I had to rewind and watch again because I had never been exposed to such powerful scenes (the bathtub scene in the father chapter). I dont know how it escaped me or I've never heard anyone else talk about it. I'll be watching every film you reccomend that I havent seen. Huge love from Canada.

Great reviews, my friend.

I've seen Passion of the Christ twice, years apart. Both times, I could barely get through it. As much I love horror movies and books, some of these movies, I just wouldn't be able to watch now. Awesome video.

"Irreversible", "Twelve years a slave", "Savior"

Crucifixion was a punishment reserved for the poor, for slaves and for non-Romans. Wearing a cross showed affinity or solidarity with the impoverished and downtrodden

I'm not especially religious in that way, but I saw "Passion" on opening weekend in a pretty Catholic part of the country and I have never - I mean never - seen a theatre so moved. People sobbing, holding each other. They were affected in a way I haven't seen before or since.

I just recognised the character Beleck from Prison Break. He played the prison guard.

You had another disturbing list and I watched one. I think you said it would stay with you. It did. And I still not only see scenes in my head, but I also think about it. I had something similar happen to me. Watching it helped me, somehow. At least I’m not as hurt by my experience as I was before I watched it.

I hadn't heard of Men Behind the Sun, but as soon as I read Unit 731 on the poster I'm like NOPE! nope nope nope! that was one wikipedia reading thats burnt into my psyche from years back.

Despite being brutally disturbing, I think Men Behind the Sun and The Passion of the Christ are both really important films that most people should see at some point in their lives. I think you summed both movies up very well.
