Part 3 of my ‘Most Disturbing British Movies That Will Ruin Your Week’ series.

This time I’m taking a look at seven British films that prove horror doesn’t always have to be a horror movie. From social realism and psychological dramas to controversial cinema, weird loners, nightmare nights out and possibly the most depressing and disturbing kids movie I’ve ever seen!

I’ll explore what makes these films so disturbing, the themes hiding beneath the surface, and why some of them are more frightening that traditional horror. And there is one thing that connects all of these films. Something that they are all doing but in very different ways. Can you tell what it is?

Films Discussed:
0:00 Intro
01:02 South West 9 (2001)
04:22 A Room For Romeo Brass (1999)
06:57 Tony (2009)
10:11 Watership Down (1978)
12:46 Shallow Grave (1994)
14:36 The Devils (1971)
17:24 Red Road (2006)
21:04 Outro

Let me know in the comments if you have seen any of these films, and if I’ve missed one that you think deserves to be on this list, drop it in the comments and I’ll try and add it to the next one!

Love to see a fellow Rocky Horror fan.
I went through a period in my early teens, every day after school I would watch it.

I remember Watership Down, aged 7 and trying to stiffle my tears in the cinema. I still can't watch it or listen to the theme tune.

Watership Down. I was 4.
I have never fully got over it.
The rabbit shapes, wide eyes and mouths, squeezing into a smaller and smaller space, suffocating, trying to escape... Yeah, not over it. Never will be.
Hate that film.
Love that film.

A Room for Romeo Brass is a belter. It's criminal that this one didn't make it past a DVD release. Even Dead Mans shoes had a proposed 4K cancelled. Shameful.

13:12 shallow grave is Danny Boyles' best film.

His father, after watching one of his more popular films said, "it's good, but it's not shallow grave."
I agree

Not many films these days are worth seeing at the theatre, ,but when I saw The Devil's was remastered and going to be shown I bought tickets immediately. I haven't been so excited to see a movie since Silence of the Lambs. I was 1 when it came out and never gpt to see it . From what I've heard from people who got early screenings it's goona be incredible.

I'm not a fan of traditional horror films but I'm hooked on this series, thanks to Ricky's insights!

I subbed after seeing just one post of yours Ricky. I've been a fan of horror and dark themed films since I was a boy and would watch Hammer Horror films with my dad. Much to my mothers dismay. Shallow Grave. Great film . The three flatmates relationships disintegrate as you would imagine under the circumstances.

I saw TONY on one of those bootleg multi film blu-ray discs that you find everywhere in markets in the Philippines when I was living there and I thought it was a good film. I had completely forgotten about it so I'll endeavour to seek it out and watch it again. Thanks for reminding me.

I used to work in a McDonald's in Glasgow, and actor Colin McCreadie came in as a customer a few times. Why I mention him because he was in Shallow Grave. He was the ginger-haired guy that the three main protagonists interview about being a potential new flatmate, and who Ewan McGregor's character verbally humiliates. He'd later go on to star in Taggart after Mark McManus died. I was quite surprised when I saw him, because he was shorter than I would have imagined. He's only about 5ft6. Nice guy, btw.

"Your limitations can be something that actually enhances..." The way that you manage your limitations is a key ingredient in the character of your style. Django Reinhardt and Tony Iommi are both legendary guitar players regarded as pioneers in their chosen fields (gypsy jazz and heavy metal), and neither of them had the "benefit" of 10 functional fingers to play their instruments with. Frank Zappa's iconic deep & raspy voice was the outcome of an injury to his throat that lowered his voice pitch by a third of an octave. To paraphrase Rocky Balboa: it ain't about how perfect things are. It's about how you rise to the challenge of handlng the imperfections.

Dude, another superb video, you don't miss.

Have you seen Occupation 101, the documentary, very upsetting, I watched it many, many years ago and not sure how I found it.

Also, the French film, Holy Rollers 😮 mental.

Maria Full of Grace and Sin Nombre, excellent Latin films.

Keep up the good work 🤘🏻🙏🍻

We loved Watership Down when it first came out. ( we sang the song and each had a toy bunny named after one of the characters. We were outraged as their world was destroyed as ours was going through a building phase that did exactly this to our old field and wood playground, we understood predator and prey because, what else is school bullying if not that? We felt their helplessness, fear and grief. Children cope so much better with harsh stories than adults do. That's why original fairy stories are so brutal I guess, to get through to children past their innocent sense of immortality.
