When WB rereleased some older Looney Tunes on DVD, they included a disclaimer that acknowledged that these cartoons were extremely racist, but they left them unaltered because "censoring them would be the same as pretending that bigotry isn't real."

That's some real self-awareness, right there.

I hate the whole “Strong Independent woman” and “Not like other girls” tropes cause it literally is telling girls that being feminine is something bad or is some kind of weakness

Don't forget that Jasmine's power ballad about being "speechless" is LITERALLY SUNG IN HER IMAGINATION

Releasing an animal that was raised entirely in captivity into the wild without proper rehabilitation program is actually a very stupid and cruel move, since that animal has no clue about where to look for food, what to avoid, in case of elephants, a highly social species, it has no idea how to communicate or behave with its entirely wild counterparts etc. A REAL smart move would be to put Dumbo and his mom in a sanctuary (or a zoo as a last resort), like it's done with retired circus animals nowdays.

A quote from Warner Brothers:
"The cartoons you are about to see are products of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While the following does not represent Warner Bros. view of today's society, these cartoons are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."

"It feels like commentary, but it's commentary that doesn't say anything."

That has to be the most concise summary of the whole live-action remake ordeal.

Seeing as Studio Ghibli is often compared to Disney, I think it's safe to say that Miyazaki actually knows how to make empowered female heroines without constantly reminding us of how empowered she is. They just are, it's part of their characterization, nuff said.

Hayao Miyazaki: “Many of my movies have strong female leads- brave, self-sufficient girls that don't think twice about fighting for what they believe with all their heart. They'll need a friend, or a supporter, but never a savior. Any woman is just as capable of being a hero as any man.”

Making Jasmine like that in the remake destroys the dynamic between her and Aladdin. Originally Aladdin wanted the palace life while Jasmine was trying to get out of it. Now it's just a mess.

if they want to successfully sweep their "problematic past" under the rug they should stop making these remakes in the first place. Just make new stories, better ones, with the messages that they now want to stand for

The Little Mermaid remake is going to have at least some mentions of the trash in the ocean and you can't change my mind.

Mulan was empowering, she’s a smart, out of the box thinker who worked hard and saved China. It was the perfect movie that didn’t need a remake.

Danny DiVito making a speech about how the circus is now cruelty free sounds like a scam to promote fight milk

That’s the thing about the new Aladdin, jasmine has to tell you she’s strong and empowered, and in the original she just was strong and empowered

Fun Fact: the original Dumbo was going to be a short, but because Pinocchio failed, Disney needed more money, so they had to stretch it out into a whole film. The pink elephants scene is there because the film needed more screen time.

I’ve come to notice that the problem “woke” people have with old movies is that they teach the “wrong” lesson. Like Cinderella, people don’t like that she doesn’t save herself, but the point of the movie isn’t about how to leave home and hopefully find some sort of job. It’s about staying strong and kind in a bad situation

Did they leave out the part where Dumbo and his mother starve to death because they don't know how to live in a jungle?

Lindsay Ellis: thinks about Disney

Disney: blinks

Youtube: De-monetized

I kinda like the way Warner Bros post this disclaimer about their past cartoons like Looney Tunes that were filled with racial stereotypes:

"The cartoons you are about to see are products of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While the following does not represent the Warner Bros. view of today’s society, these cartoons are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming that these prejudices never existed."

It shows about them admitting their company's and people's history instead of white washing that Disney is trying to do right now.
