What makes me especially crazy is the amount of people in online comments spewing that “the biological parents ~didn’t even want the baby~ so the surrogate should have him!”

Excuse me. This baby was extremely wanted and loved.

They were delivered horrible news that the baby they had worked so hard for was likely going to suffer. They tried to make the most humane decision, and when they learned that TFMR was not going to be an option for them, they made other arrangements. The surrogate, as you said, just wanted to be in the middle of a circus.

There are a number of countries in which surrogacy is simply illegal. This kind of thing is why.

To me, it feels like in the US, contracts are now worthless. Emotions are more important than a document that was signed. People's words are worthless. It's very scary and troubling imo.

0:54 im early on in this video, but the biological parents did respect the carrier's decision to not abort the baby and made medical appointments to take steps for the fetus' health and later wellbeing once it was born. she stopped responding to the bio parents, didnt go to any more appointments and went to Texas for "protection"

There are many problematic cases dealing with surrogacy. I have heard of many of them where the genetic parents changed their mind when a baby wasn't the "correct" gender or had a health issue, or they got divorced or something like that, leaving the surrogate mother completely abandoned during pregnancy. In one such American case, the impoverished surrogate was stuck with many thousands of dollars in medical bills, ruining her credit, while she was caring for their sick infant. There needs to be strong international laws protecting every interested party of the surrogacy, with the strongest protections for the child (who never agreed to any of it).

In the case of "Baby Rumi" (whom Ken Paxton and surrogate McKenna West have been calling "Baby Gabriel"), the entire reason why Paxton took on this case was because of Texas Republicans using Islamophobia to scare their voter base into going to the polls. "Rumi" was named for a popular Muslim poet by his biological parents, but Paxton and West want to "baptize and raise him as a Christian instead".

Ken Paxton being involved in this really serves to affirm my opinion that a "pro-life" label is not a principled stance, just a hall pass to be awful in other ways.
