Thanks for watching the Strong Roots Farm. We are a small regenerative farm in Southern Ohio, raising Grassfed Beef, and Pasture Raised Pork, and Eggs. We are a profitable farm that strives to produce the highest quality of meat to our customers, and although we are focused on quality production on our farm we have a Homestead feel compared to the rest of our Big Ag community. We are not full-time farmers. My wife, Jenny teaches 4th grade math at our local elementary school, and I'm an Industrial Engineer working at a near by production facility. Love the runner analogy. Gonna use this when explaining to newbies about getting into long range shooting. Great analogy for just about any instructor to use with new participants. Excellent analogy!

I really appreciate the information. It has helped me understand why my father has chosen the cow breeds he has over the years (Red Brangus). Your comment about black cows causing issues is one of the exact same reason my father stays away from them too. Plus he just has a thing for red cows.

We went with Dexter because we don't have a lot of land. Smaller cow for smaller acreage.

Bottle calves you can train to be what you want if you want to cow calf my Holstein and jersey will follow me like dogs back to water or mineral and back to the paddock I want pressure on the daily interaction is critical if you want animals that do what you want

I appreciate your breakdown of this. Lots of good advice for beginners and even those of us who have been trying to figure this out for a while.

We have grass fed dexters and have for almost eight years, and they have been great for the most part. We got into them mostly because other breeds were intimidating due to their size, and our primary purpose originally was our own beef. But looking back, I think I would start just like you have laid out here: get some calves of different breeds, raise them up, and see what works out best.

I am curious, do you notice any difference in feed conversion rates in smaller cattle like South Poll or dexters, or is it not significant enough to matter when feeding pasture?
