Nutrition for cows in their last trimester is everything!

Here in NC and southern VA we are in the high 300-400 a hundred weight right now.

I can agree with him that most people have way too much machinery, and machinery cost are through the roof. i’m not an accountant, but I guess I disagree with him about depreciation. Yes you’re going to sell cull cows for less money when the cattle markets at the low. I have managed over 3000 cows at one time. I was able to make the cold cows Bring just as much as what the heifer calves that I was saving back for replacements were worth. as long as you maintain your herd at the same age and don’t sell out at the low it can remain fairly constant on a balance sheet. The cost to maintain a cow for 12 months is about 80% of the  total budget. everybody thinks that to be a low-cost producer you’ve got to eliminate spending any money for Feed that’s not true. you must maintain that cow in a good body condition score if you’re going to get her to produce at her genetic potential. The way to reduce Feed cost is to select for animals that are feed efficient. go where they have tested bulls for individual feed efficiency and look for the bull that has the best feed conversion. That trait is 45% inheritable to his offspring, keep heifers back out of him, like the man said in the video about increasing weaning weights it’s a waste of time all that does is make your cows, larger and larger overtime If you keep your own replacement heifers, that’s what I’m talking about. This is a close system to where you retain your own replacement heifers  and you build this cowherd overtime

Very helpful. Thanks

Wow.. thanks for sharing

Seed cost and fertilizer is $250,000 for mother crop on 1000 tillage acres not counting fuel equipment and labor baling and wrapping pea oat alfalfa 😮

The government taught farmers how to spend money instead of paying taxes quit buying crap we don't need and save money

Hi its a great speach with top interessting content, but it is a pitty we can not see Jims charts, that would help to dive deeper and aply more on our own farms. Will this be possible in the future?

That’s why I purchase my hay.

Healthy, live calves at weaning divided by number of cows exposed at breeding.  Also as a percent of bred cows kept for calving. This is one of the biggest keys to profitability.  Big bulls cause problems, but remember the cow has more to do with calving ease and success than the bull as long as the bull is within reasonable size.  The cow's pelvic area, temperment, mothering instinct, overall health, nutrition, gestation length (a fetus gains a pound a day in last few weeks) did she calve at 275 days or 290? on and on.  Remember that weaning weight is tied closely to birth weight, which epd is more important to your operation, weaning or yearling weight?  Keep these things in mind when the bull auctioneer is raving about POUNDS.

With feed cost even now its close to break even on finished steers 😮

if you go to business school they will tell you there are only 3 ways for a business to move forward no matter what business you are in , output, efficiency and net worth , just apply that to what you are doing any way that you can and you should stay in business , if you are producing beef it is easy to add up what you sold in a year and go from there

No way. Cattle are never going back down to those prices.

The idea cows are going back down to goat prices is just not realistic.

We need less equipment?  That hit a nerve.

I disagree that feed costs are the highest cost in a livestock operation. It’s human labor. When you account for your time and pay yourself enough to cover health insurance, mortgage, and bills, you’ll see that the human labor cost is at least as high as the feed and probably more. That goes for every employee on the operation. The reason labor doesn’t cross anyone’s mind when looking at cost is because farmers are used to not paying themselves. That’s why we’re a dying breed!

Hi all Ranchers 🤝 , what do you all think in border importing cattle from Mexico to USA 🇺🇸
Is it affecting some American Ranchers and prices
Who here buys steers being importing from Santa Teresita, New Mexico leave a comment I might just be able to team am and network, God bless all ranchers and busines men and women 🙏🏼

Selling at the auction is the worst mistake that an operator can make.

I don't think he said anything to inflammatory here. I do disagree with him on the depreciation of these assets. The guy buying brand new tractors and $3500 bred cows is going to have a large amount of depreciation vs a producer buying used depreciated equipment and rasing his own replacements that depreciation schedule will be much less. Operations are not one size fits one and i would tread carefully  with large encompassing statements and be careful with the road of cost cutting to profitability, it follows the rule of diminishing returns.

Long term- the price of all agricultural commodities will go down in real terms. It even happened to legal cannabis producers
