A surveilance state without computers or cctv. Terrifying and impressive

My uncle was arrested by the Stasi and subjected to torture for three years, he would eventually die from long-term effects. I'm watching this right next to his photo.

The Stasi Destroyed my family. I don't want to get too much into it since that would make me identifiable but I can say that the Stasi actually tore my family apart effectively.

Some of my relatives became genuinely insane and are big conspiracy theorists because well... Their biggest conspiracy turned out to be true. The rest of my family has a really deep level of distrust towards everyone. We found out 15 years after the reunification that one of our family members was a part of the Stasi and spying on us. It's difficult to explain what consequences this had but it is safe to say it isn't very good

There was a man who escaped East Germany by swimming through the Baltic Sea.
He left his mother with instructions to report him missing when he set his plan into motion, so she would not get arrested as an accomplice.

13:20 my mouth is GAPING open .... the govt breaking into your house to move your furniture is nightmare fuel

Can you imagine the type of person who would work at a career where it's your job to come up with ways to destroy a person bit by bit over years even

I feel so bad for Ms R... That's horrifying. A terrible way to go. Especially for a doctor. She could've saved so many lives.... Instead she died in a mental hospital by her own hand....

Nothing says "German Democratic Republic" quite like subjecting the population to an Orwellian level of surveillance.

Many years ago, there was a TV commercial in which someone's usual brand of coffee was secretly replaced by the brand of coffee making the commercial.
Now I know how they came up with that idea.

Very good video. Well done.
My family and some friends where targets of the Stasi because they are pacifist or didn't want to join the socialist party.
Imprisonment, torture (Like sleep deprivation, beatings, living in prision cells that are filled with water or so small you cant stand up) and repression  have been completely normal. Some spending years in prison.
My grandma lost her job because she wore a skirt from West Germany.
A friend got interrogated for 8hours while she was 7months pregnant.
And there is much more that I probably can't say on youtube.

Sadly there are still Germans that glorify this time and wish it will return. So those videos are important to show the reality.

Why do the most suppressive governments, countries and political  factions insist on using the word democratic when naming themselves?

As someone with bi polar I can confirm what they did to that woman would have been confusing, terrifying , disturbing and highly upsetting,

Always good to enjoy a few beers on a Friday night listening to the finest orator on the internet talking about interesting historical situations

Unfortunately,  we won't even have paper records of our surveillance because Palantir and other companies can just hit a button and erase it all.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

9:00 so, essentially HR policy in any big tech company.

The Stasi also used KIDS to spy on their own parents. West and East Germany both had a Television Show called "Das Sandmännchen" which is for smaller kids, meant to be watched before bed ("The little Sandman"). In East Germany the Sandmännchen had a different look to the western Sandmännchen, so the spies often questioned kids, what they would watch at the tv and how the figures look like - determining wether their parents illegally recieved western tv.
The Stasi had also very subtible other strategies involving animals/pets.
It's very interesting, as they developed many ways to spy on citizens that don't get reported that often.
[Fun Fact: the eastern Sandmännchen is what's streaming in the whole BRD since early 1989)

This planet is way overdo for a flood.

It doesn't get more fucked up than this.

Its happening to innocent people now,. Zersetzung was the warm up, child's play and its now twice as horrific. Ask millions of Targeted Individuals.  Of course history doesn't repeat itself, of course this isn't happening to me and countless other innocent people right now!!! 🙄
