Koi Filter Worms Are BACK… And WORSE Than Before! 😱 Can You Help Me?

*They’re back… and this time there are MORE of them! 😱🪱*

During my previous video, I discovered some nasty, wiggly worm-like fly larvae living inside my Koi pond filter system. I thought I had removed the problem — but while I was away on our **Scotland adventure**, I received a worrying report from my daughter, who was looking after the pond, Koi and filtration system…

*The filter had started backing up again!*

When I returned home and investigated, it quickly became obvious that my unwelcome visitors had returned — and this time they appeared to be *far greater in number!*

In this video, I get stuck into the filter system once again, show you just how bad the infestation has become, remove as many of these creatures as I can, and try to work out *why they keep coming back.*

But this time, I need *YOUR help!*

The crystal-clear water I had earlier in the season has become increasingly difficult to maintain, and I've had to take some drastic measures to try to get the water back under control.

I'll show you what I've been dealing with, what I've tried so far, and whether I'm finally starting to win the battle against the algae.

I’m presuming it’s a kockney koi type up and down filter. I literally gave mine away. There’s so much tracking that large parts of the filter are dead. Horizontal flow is much much better.

i had issues with them in my bakki shower this year. just made a few more small gaps in the media to compensate. parameters are still fine. fish love them. i see them as a bonus koi food

Hi Andy with a gravity fed system the UV is usually mounted after the filter so the dead clumped algae goes straight into the pond and with the summer we’re having the amount of algae being killed by the UV is more than usual. A pump fed system has the UV mounted before the filter so the dead algae is taken out before the water goes back to the pond. So if you can somehow mount the UV before the filter this might help.

Hi Andy, Re your worm issue, my only suggestion that might possibly help with the bay part, would be to replace your piece of white plastic with a piece of stainless steel that has got holes in it. Being a smoother surface the worms will have more trouble clinging on. Admittedly over time you will get a bio film on the metal and then the worms will attach but the metal will be easier to clean off.

The only other way might be too redesign your bays in a way that is easier to clean that particular area of the filter.

Hi Andy. If you make larger holes in the plate holding the Japanese matting, those larvae will likely appear in smaller numbers.
Yes, they clog the system, but they are an excellent source of protein for the koi.

If its any help i get them off with an old toilet brush the nexus doesn't clog though they form around the intake and areas of high oxygen

My nexus is full of them too..it must have been the heatwave I've never seen so many..midges must love the heat..my tropical fish love them!now it's autumn they'll die off unfortunately they will be back next year there's not much I think you can do about them good luck!

Hi Andy, think I've mentioned this before, you've got the bay set up wrong, the moving bed wants to be the last bay. If not possible then 2nd to last at least.

Use , BTI Thuringiensus Israelensis. It's afish , dog friendly nemotode that causes paralysis in black fly and mozzy larvae digestives tract and they die. I've been using it a couple of years now with no problem. You can also use it in house plants if you get those horrible little black flies. Use every couple of weeks or when you notice them, kills them within 24 hours. Brilliant little bugs.

Put up a garden sail to shade the pond 👍🏼cheap and works really well and you can take it down in the winter. I run a nexus and run my pump at 50% no problem with fines🐟👍🏼

Move the bays around and add some guppys or mosquito fish they look like mosquito larvae

That's gravity fed system for you.... You can't get enough pressure to keep the holes free Be a lot better with a gravity fed sieve at start then pump fed after that as for the worm issues salt water spray every so often should do it with filter off👍

i have an eazypod, this is the first year with this pond and there are loads of these guys in the eazypod. did you put it down to the algae bloom this year ?

Hi enjoy ya channel I've got these worms my pump on my small ezpod is at 30% 40% I mostly get them in my bottom drain when I take it out to clean pipework as its the removable one I jet wash them out into a big waterbutt and feed some to me fish I don't really get many in pod m8 😅

I would recommend some plants to consume the nutrients in water and reduce feeding. I have a reef aquarium and only time I get algae is when my nutrients is out of whack (phosphates and nitrate levels). So I would assume this is your case and with sunlight it’s all a perfect recipe for algae blooms.
