Fallout's pre-war America was a nightmare, but it was also pretty weird. You'd be walking down 2077 streets in your 50s letterman jacket, observing screaming faces of the local architecture, all the while carrying a standard 10mm pistol.

Corrections:
- There was a 9mm Mauser in Fallout 1, and 9mm ammo/weaponry did appear in F2 and Tactics. While the 10mm is still much more common (there's only one 9mm Mauser in F1, for example), it's still a mess up not to mention it. Thanks to TheStrayHALOMAN for the correction!
- The robobrain was a secret project kept from the public. It wouldn't be traumatizing civilians. Thanks to zacharythemad8462 for the correction!

Fallout 1's pre-war aesthetic is 100% Metropolis meets Gotham City from The Tim Burton Batman movie. It's like the 1930s/40s, but with 70s and 80s scifi blended together.

There’s a video by nvRanger and Co. that talks about the art deco architecture and they suggested that they statues bear the face of the founders and ceos of those respective buildings. Giving the idea to the workers that the boss is always watching.

I wish they went further with the Art Deco style. It's more than just sticking faces on buildings. It's defined by symmetrical shapes and stylish flair.
I get it's dystopian but it should still shine through.

On the topic of drugs: the box for mentats across the different games is designed to look like a breathmint box, even coming in different flavors in Fallout New Vegas.

I think the developers intended to have some fun with the saying "handing out drugs like it was candy". Because in pre-war america, that's basically what they did.

Codsworth trying to manipulate us with its coding doesn't gel with

1. The fact you have to pass a persuade check to get him to open up about actually being miserable.
2. He approves/disapproves of actions you take and can flat out leave you and walk away if you piss him off enough.

Dude defo has free will. Makes choices.

the more I hear about pre war fallout America the more it dawns on me that current day America is having a convergent development, it's crazy how accurate the games are with current day world, ofc there's a lot of inaccuracies

codsworth is absolutely sentient. i dont know how you can be this informed about fallout, but conclude 'ya thats just code'. we watch him have a meltdown and existential crisis. he has to be convinced to tell you more about what happened while you were gone. he makes moral judgments about your actions. he expresses emotions on a deeper level than other mr handys, and we have plenty examples of non-sentient machines becoming sentient, such as in fo76 where an assaultron (I think?) is 'tethered' to a corpse, because his programming wont let him leave, but hes developed an intense hate for his creator and his situation.

Talking about 10mm, I believe it was sold not as a "9mm replacement", but as a ".45 ACP upgrade". .45 is still popular in the US right now, and I believe that an... upgraded, more futuristic version of it, redesigned for supersonic speeds while keeping the stopping power, would have some genuine appeal to the general public.

I think the color mode on the TV from fallout 3 was a developer oversight. Whoever was responsible for the modeling and texturing of that model was only briefed to make a box style television based on one from the mid 60s, which did have a color switch.

Art Deco also reflects the arrogant consumerism of the elites in the 1920s. The 20s is pretty infamous for the detached, almost laissez-faire attitude of elites spiralling into worldwide economic collapse and major upheaval. It's possible that Art Deco was revived before the Resource wars when the economy was genuinely being improved by new tech, only to again take on the bitter irony when America became authoritarian and expansionist and the world went to hell.

You're describing Gen X. We had violent cartoons. We watched people die live on TV. We didn't have a rating system to save us from sex or violence. I watched 7 astronauts die, live, direct to my classroom in school, and all we got was extended recess. Fallout plays it as dark humor. For us it was Tuesday, and we had school the next day.

In the 90s when the first games were made, 10mm pistols were supposed to be the new thing and were fairly popular. They were seen as the future and now they are fairly hard to sell and are undersirable. This 90s view is probably why they used 10mm atleast in the original games
