as someone with brazilian family members, what i've been told is: "in brazil wigs were never a thing, if you are wearing wigs there you are trying to scape or you have cancer, however it dosent mean black hair was accepted, black brazilians have been trying and failing to straighten their hair for the longest time, making their hair look stiff cuz hairstylists did not understood their texture, so recently they came to the conclusion their hair looks better natural than whatever they were trying to do to with it"

I think the biggest difference I see in communities outside Brazil is how often people wash their hair. I’ve heard people say it’s normal to go two or more weeks without washing your hair. Here in Brazil, that’s unthinkable. I wash mine at least two or three times a week.

As a brazilian girl with long 4b/4c hair, I will give some tips that might help other girls:

-Wash you hair!! I wash my hair everyday, you don't need to do the same as I do but wash it's at least 2 or 3 times a week.

-ALWAYS (i said always☝️) apply hair mask after washing your hair.
-Always detangle your hair in the shower, the process is easier when your hair is soaked in water.

-Where I live the weather is really hot so I apply heat protection oil everyday.

-See your hair like a gift and not like a problem. You have coily hair, not everyone have it, you are special. Love your hair and It will love you back.

Brazilian here I must add that our climate plays a huge role in the appearance and health of our hair the humidity keeps the hair plush and healthy. I live in nyc now doing the same routine but my hair is just not the same probably because diet and weather has changed

Neglecting and non-existent hair care is the problem. Doesn’t really matter if it’s in a low maintenance style or an out style—they require the same care: regular washing, conditioning, and proper detangling. There’s no cheat code. The answer will always be actual hair care.

as a Brazilian, it's actually crazy to me that you have never gone to the beach or the pool with your natural hair 😯 I could never imagine that! Reading the comments I also saw that some people don't wash their hair for 3 months!!!! that's unheard of in Brazil.

Even 3 weeks like you do would be kinda crazy here. I wash my hair once a week and sometimes I already feel like that's pushing it because my scalp starts to itch. I truly believe that washing the hair more does help with the health.

As a brazilian its genuinely flabbergasting to me that you can go more than like a week and even half a week withuot washing your hair. Like here, its VERY common to wash hair every day or every other day, and not washing for more than a week is seen as dirty/trashy

as a brazilian I unfortunetly have to inform that because of social media, young black girls here are starting to use braids constantly and wigs are starting to be common

I am haitian  and we really believe  in letting the hair breath. They say stop puting  things in your hair. Its also your food. Your iron levels. Eat liver or black bean sause

The hair is a part of our body. We have a form of body dysmorphia because We think our hair doesn’t look “right”, highly textured and shrunken. We wear hair pieces in massive numbers on a regular basis.

My hair is 3b, but I live in Salvador in the state of Bahia and people here use their natural hair with such a normalcy that I always get a whiplash when I see people talking about not be able to retain length if use their hair loose or if wash frequently. Many people straighten their hair and get tire of the look and cut all back and begin natural and go back and forth with textures and styles. Its hair, it grows ❤

Growing up in the US, we were told not to wash our hair too often bc it would cause breakage and dryness. It’s taking a while for most to unlearn this. For me though, as someone who sweats a lot from the scalp when working out, washing every 4 days has been a game changer for me. So much less breakage, more moisture retention, less tangles.

Brazilian here: just wash more often, please!

I’m African and I’m telling you… just take care of your hair. Genuinely. Love your hair, wash it when you’re supposed to, let it breathe every few months and don’t use 596 products on it. Your hair will grow, it’s strong enough. Stop trying to catch up to someone else. All hair, even same textured hair from the same area is different. Don’t compare it to someone else. Focus on you. Because through that you will figure out what works for your hair. For my hair less products and weekly washes works for me. Protective hairstyles for about 2 to 3 months help, but I know for other people that may not be the case. That’s why I say. All hair is different and you need to find what works for you❤

In early June I started washing my 4c hair 2x a week and styling in a wash n go. My hair has THRIVED. I live in CA where the air is super dry. Rehydrating my hair so often has healed my scalp issues and has my hair growing like a weed.  It's grown 2 inches since June. Yes, 2 INCHES. Plus it's more dense. I'll always advocate for frequent hair washing.

That’s why I never understood or fell for the protective styles propaganda. I wanna enjoy my own hair and use my good products but I can’t do that if it’s always in a protective style. Like what am I protecting it from all the time, it’s not in harms way😭

Girls, washing your hair is good for your hair, scalp, AND MENTAL HEALTH. As a Brazilian with curly hair and some mental issues, taking 10 more minutes to wash my hair feels like washing away all the bad feelings and thoughts.

For almost two years now, I have been washing my hair twice per week. Prior to that, I was faithfully washing once per week. My hair has definitely changed, especially when it comes to density and moisture retention. My scalp no longer itches.
