I went to a Ghanaian wedding in London last year. My sister and I and 2 other women were the only younger women wearing our hair out...EVERY GIRL WAS WEARING A WIG. I am not lying. People kept commenting to my mum saying how much they loved me and my sister's hair and how beautiful it looked. Crazy. Under your wig is afro hair. Please girlies embrace your hair, at least from time to time. It is worthy.

If I told you I had a boyfriend that I really loved, but hid him away for every special occasion, always complained that that he was alot to deal with and any time he did come out with me I tried to  make him look like someone else, would you believe that I actually loved him? No, but that's how these women talk about their hair and want us to believe they actually like it.

I understand that at times natural hair can get negative comments, but my thing is…we are the only ones who have that type of hair. Meaning we can change the perception and normalize it by wearing it out more so at the end of the day, we can change the narrative.

I think we need to take some accountability as adults and wear our natural hair rather than blame media. The chance you want to see in the world wear your natural hair encourage other women to wear their natural hair like wearing your natural hair

If they didn’t hate it they would wear it out more and this goes for the influencers. You can call wigs protective style all you want but if you have it on 364/365 days then I know what you are.

As someone living in the UK (Scotland to be more precise), I have to agree that wigs, braids and relaxed hair are definitely more common than natural hair around me.
I stopped wearing anything on my natural hair at all about 2.5 years ago now and it's so rare to see people wearing their natural hair out on the streets that I get looks from a lot of black women when I'm out and about with my hair.
I also get excited when I see other natural hair girlies out in the wild because it is so rare. So not completely non-existent, but very rare for sure.

My fro is pretty big and it shapes my face and head more elegantly than flat hair. Honestly feel   like a fairy princess with my crown.

wow i didn't remember that Winx Club episode. just wow. On the reverse, Jimmy Neutron had an episode with Libby embracing her natural hair and wearing and loving braids (no extensions, just her hair). I remember that episode.

I love the discussion of influencers discussing hair. It never gets old. I been natural for over 10 yrs i definitely want to start discussing different hair topics on my channel. Im sick of the labeling on 4c being tough and unmanageable. Black queens need to learn their hair. My hair started with a twa and traction alopecia. Now my hair is down my back. Take accountability with accepting and learning your hair

The same way people can teach themselves how to do their own makeup or lay a wig is the same way you can learn YOUR hair. Time and patience. I started braiding my own hair in middle school cuz my mom wasn't doing the styles I wanted and have been natural on and off since 2002. It's a labor of love, I am not invested in other women's hair personally, but as a whole, yeah, you have hair on your head, just take a little time to learn how to take care of it.

The only cent I have to throw in this convo for wig wearers is to not take advantage of that full hairline!
When I used to wear wigs, I had inches & inches of natural hair, but my hairline was pushed so far back that wigs were no longer a choice but a necessity.
So Biko, appreciate that hairline & don’t neglect your natural hair!!😭 if you must wear wigs then make sure you’re handling your natural hair with TLC 🫶🏿

the nail on the coffin for me was both understanding how the human hair harvesting industry works and also the fact that i tend to have braids back to back to back like, how will i ever learn how to take care of my hair even if i say i love it yeah?, if i never have it out? the girl with the blue dress killed it. i watched that video once and took my braids out lmao

A huge part of this is anti-blackness. It is why someone will say their hair doesn't fit their own face. Your hair is literally shaped to fit your face. It is okay to be uncomfortable; the discomfort of looking inwards is what I see people struggling with.

We can call it a protective style all we want, but why are there no protective styles in what your OWN hair texture looks like? What exactly about your own natural hair needs to be kept covered all the time? And when you leave it out, it has to be contorted into other forms. Then we wonder why we say it takes too long.

It is not just the texture. Anti-blackness is rooted not just in texturism, but in length as well. Why does it have to be long? Or at a specific length? 'Oh, I don't have edges'—okay, but slapping on edge control and gels or hiding them under wigs isn't helping. We are going back to anti-blackness as the root.

The other part is the systemic issue of how Black hair is treated. While we can acknowledge that, we cannot normalize it by believing that fitting into Eurocentric standards is how to fall in line. This creates a vicious cycle that young Black girls see and then emulate.

We have to get comfortable showing up as ourselves and not being 'done.' I say 'done' because what is defined as 'done' or 'professional' is rooted in white supremacy. Again, it can be uncomfortable, but it takes one person to start, and others are more likely to follow.

I feel like this. The conversation isn’t perfect but it’s being had. I like that we’re talking about our natural beauty and our health, including eating and exercise.

UK girly here 🇬🇧. I rock my natural hair from twists, bantu knots, flat twists, canerows, braids. I take pride in the fact that I can wear my hair in styles that only black women can rock well. I will say it’s hard to find salons in the UK that care for black hair well most are focussed on styling not hair care. Also disclaimer I spent many summers in the Caribbean, close to my Caribbean heritage and black identity so I wear it with pride not shame like some Black British people without a strong black cultural identity.

I used to wear my natural hair in the UK between braids. I only attracted white men 🤷🏾‍♀️ and quite wealthy black African men.
