Band parades don’t get much more rural than this. Killyclooney is a place I had never visited before, despite living and travelling near it for most of my life. It sits on a hill not far from Ballymagory, Tullyard, and Cullion in the Strabane District of County Tyrone.
After the First World War, many homes and several Orange Halls in this area were built from tin. The nearby village of Bready was almost entirely made of tin buildings, including their Orange Hall and a Church Hall once used by the B Specials. Over the years, these structures were replaced with modern buildings, and Killyclooney Orange Hall was no exception. The original tin hall stood for almost a century before it was finally time for renewal. It’s great to see that the new hall keeps the spirit of the old one, rebuilt in a similar style but with modern insulated tin.
Today marked the Official Re‑opening and Dedication of the new hall, with a short parade held from a nearby farm. Three bands took part:
John Sayers Memorial Accordion Band from Strabane
Barron Accordion Band from near Donemana
Pride of William Auld Boys Flute Band from Donemana
They were joined by the Killycloney LOL287 and visiting Brethren from neighbouring districts.
The weather stayed dry, and the sun even broke through as the parade made its way to the hall. After the ribbon was cut and the hall officially opened, people made their way inside to the music of a lone piper. The crowd was too large for the hall itself, so shelters were set up in the car park along with a PA system, allowing everyone to take part in the service.
