Today I finally drive the new BMW 8 series. It has been out for over a decade now, but still feels fresh because you almost never see them. For years I tried to get one to review, but it never worked - then last year I did, and during the drive by filming things went horribly wrong, with the driver losing control and nearly losing their life. Fortunately, the incredible build of the car saved them - but it has left me uncertain whether this is a car I love, or hate.

Today, I finally drive it - not the 840i that came before, but the full fat 625BHP M8 Compeition. How will I feel?

I can confirm that BMWs are built to a standard that's alien to their competitors. I crashed my 5 series on the 10 (Callifornia highway) on my way to Palm Springs. When I saw the wall coming towards me at 65mph, I thought I was done. A split second later, my car was totalled, but I was fine. All the parts of the car are riveted to each other like airplane wings are. Serious stuff.

The firemen that came to help me asked me if I was okay, anything broken? I said no. They each peaked in their heads a little, took a look around the cabin, and nodded. The second one said: "Good car. The other eight cars (we all aqua-planed at the same time: rain+oil+sand) didn't fare so well. We're gonna go tend to them, leave you to the Sheriff. He'll be here in a minute."

There's also the not small matter of BMW Road Assistance - within 3 seconds of my crash I heard a woman's voice in the car asking me if I was okay. I was still in shock - I looked around in the car, saw no one, thought I had died. In fact it was an operator from BMW Road Assistance: the car's computer sent them an alert, she called the car, spoke to me through the stereo. I didn't even know I'd subscribed to the service I told her; she said: It's included with the cost of the car.

She asked to tell her which freeway, which direction, which exit was closest, and called both the FD and PD for me. Even offered to call my wife. I had forgotten about this - it's been years - but I am glad I was reminded of it. It's worth sharing.

I believe this car will age like fine wine, just like its predecessor. It’s a capstone for the 2010’s - possibly one of if not the best decade BMW ever had. It’s one of the last examples of iDrive 7 before the iPad screens, great engine, great gearbox, astounding build quality, and a pre-Lego MegaGrill design. People will appreciate it way more in 10 years.

Its such a good looking oddball choice that most of the world forgot about

M8 is the best BMW currently on sale. Looks amazing. Great interior. Comfortable. Fast. Good handling.

@allengweh1907 7 months ago

The most beautiful BMW that was currently on sale. It still keeps the identity, the kidney grill is the right size.

Those stinging nettles did rather hurt 😅

@pachokardana6192 4 months ago

Also The 6 series F13 was the pinnacle .

The 8 coupe is the best looking modern BMW by a mile. It's also the last time you're going to get a TTV8 without hybrid... or at ALL.

After watching your video I’m buying one soon. Worth every penny.

You know it's serious when this is the most austere shirt James has ever donned. Jokes aside after the vid on the prior attempt I'm proud that you'd revisit said model and move forward. Godspeed sir. It's no small effort to overcome the sort of PTSD an event such as this has caused. Good on you.

An LC500 would be a interesting comparison

I have a M850 convertible. The best car I have ever owned. Buy it 2 yrs old, low miles!!

The 8 series is an absolute looker in my books compared to the rest of the bmw lineup. It has road presence which i love

@wowgreatmove 7 months ago

I personally love M8s, they sound incredible

@Mojig 7 months ago

Glad you finally got your hands on one. I have an M850I Gran Coupe and the more I hear about the M8 the more I think the M850I was the right choice. Same torque, comfort mode is actually comfortable, sounds better, less power but still very quick. I haven't noticed the brakes being too soft in the M850I, maybe the modes are different or maybe I just haven't pushed it that hard with comfort on. I've been very happy with it so far.

The 8 series is an amazing used bargain. Depreciation is so steep that if you buy one after say three years you get a whole lot of luxury car for the money. You can get a 3-4 year old M840i with good kit and low miles for well under £40k. Not bad considering someone likely paid £75k for it new.

The Gran Coupe version is definitely the way to go. It’s already big and having the convenience of a 5 seater is worth the weight. Not to mention its proportions look better too
