Today I drive a Porsche Taycan and lament the fact that no matter what it is, EVs make it very difficult to get a straight answer.

I beg to differ - not only are politicians incompetent, they are also malicious.

The government is confused about EVs.. they want people to have them but then don't want people driving around on the cheap.

Fully agree on quoting range based on how far you can go at 70mph on a motorway. A summer figure and a winter figure would be extremely useful.

@davem9204 5 months ago

If someone is doing a 1 mile commute each day they really should be walking and not driving, regardless of the type of propulsion.

Good rant. One thing to nitpick: if your heating oil provider was regulated you'd certainly pay significantly more all year round, just so that the potential market price peaks are minimized - it's so because as it stands you buy heating oil much much closer to it's fundamental cost.
Fuel on the other hand is mostly taxes.

Coming from Finland it's fascinating to see and hear how different the EV discussion in the UK. Over here slow (22 kW) charging is often around €0.25-0.30/kWh (around 22-27p) while fast charging (usually around 150-300 kW without throttling) is still generally available for under €0.40/kWh (around 35p). Charging at home is generally a fairly simple affair if you've got a driveway or yard you can park in. If you've got an outlet in a decent spot you can get away with just plugging the car into 230V and if you don't you can get an electrician to install a three-phase outlet and get an 11 kW home charger for a few hundred.

1:35 An excellent passport to insulin resistance: one mile a 15 minute walk.

Well done James.
Living in London and no driveway the maths don’t work.
What a shame the system is broken

Have been saying for yonks that it's indecently divisive the gulf between pricing for folk with off road parking versus those that don't.

A one mile comute, 3 times a week? Shank's Pony is the best, healthiest solution.

On Commercial vehicles the figure they don't show that is important is range under load. Range fall off on electric commercials once you stick stuff in the back is comical. We want to know what is the range at 0% weight load, 25%, 50%, 75%. We've looked at electric commercials and its too late after purchase to find out that with a cement mixer and a big bag of sand the range might halve so we've stayed well clear of them.

For me the big problem with EV charging away from home is complexity and lack of competition. I would mandate price signs - like for petrol stations, and ban different pricing for apps, subscriptions etc. make the price clear and enable competition.

@stuartslyper1479 5 months ago

21:34 Thank you! Range matters most when you intend to travel far and are more likely to require expensive charging. The urban range is almost irrelevant for most

@RealMunchies 5 months ago

Yes.. totally with you Jay..
It's ridiculous the way these figures are quoted and manipulated..

Ur point about initial experience with a new technology is spot on. For example, when diesel cars were first introduced en-masse in the US, back in the 70s, it was completely botched. Poor engineering, lower gasoline prices, etc doomed the cars to negative perception that was just turning around when dieselgate happened. This is despite the fact that a diesel car in America made a lot of sense for many. Long distances and commutes were quite common in the US, especially in more rural counties. These were often highway miles, ideal for a diesel. First impressions can set the mode for decades.

If any government is serious about mass EV adaptation, they need to address the issues people had rather then just force everything through. A massive pushback will come.

@J4cko999 5 months ago

Public charging is ridiculously expensive but it’s never going to have parity with home charging. If you have bought a house with a driveway that’s an investment of 300 grand or more, then you have to pay to get a charger installed. The companies that provide charging points have to buy or lease the land, then get suitable power supplied, then manage the site. So you will never get 3.5p per kWh as you are providing the land and the charger. That said, 89p is taking the piss.

@ianelliott229 5 months ago (edited)

Great video! The real truth. I live in London with no possibility of home charging. I run a 6 year old mid size ICE SUV driving 3000 miles a year. My TCO (total cost of ownership - fuel at today’s prices, insurance, road tax, depreciation, maintenance package, comprehensive warranty etc) is 78 pence per mile. No equivalent EV could get close to that.

Here in Victoria, Australia all electricity will be free 10am-2pm from Oct-26 as theres so much solar excess, so you can charge your car for free at home + other stuff

@delta0 5 months ago

The electricity price is an issue because of the difference between what a business pays for electricity vs households. The other issue is marginal pricing of electricity which is determined by the most expensive source of electricity which is gas.
