Spooky Genius! | Bo Burnham "Welcome to the Internet" | Lyricist Reacts!!!

Right when I sat in the chair this morning, a subscriber dropped a superchat and recommended that I watch Bo Burnham's "Welcome to the internet". I had absolutely no clue what to expect...that didn't last long. Bo is apparently a MASTER at making himself extremely and devastatingly clear; even above the subtle obscurities of jarring humor and catchy lyricism. This won't be my last interaction with this prophetic artist.

"Apathy's a tragedy and boredom is a crime" is an interesting point. We aren't even allowed to be bored anymore, no time to just sit and think, come up with ideas, etc. every waking moment of our lives is being monetized.

The best definition I've ever seen of this music is "This is a super-villain bragging about their plan after they've won."

“Find a tumor in your-“ and then you gotta pay $99.99 plus shipping and handling to find out where the tumor is and how to treat it.

The wierdest thing on the internet is me commenting on the internet after watching on the internet someone watching on the internet who is singing about what is on the internet.

This is a rabbithole you absolutely need to go down - this particular one is form his Netflix special, Inside - all filmed and edited by himself in one room during covid. A genuine masterpiece

It's a song sung by the villain after the villain already knows he's won

Most dystopian thing I ever heard was "why bother teaching a kid to play music? Write a book? Paint a picture? AI does it better. Children should only consume."

When you asked "why does Mommy let you use her iPad" you made a great point about Mommy just wanting you to get out of her face so she can enjoy technology herself but there's also another side of it. Like Bo said "boredom is a crime". Mommy can't just let her kid be bored. No one can ever just be bored. Every second you must be engaged with SOMETHING so if Mommy doesn't have the time or patience to entertain then she hands her kid an iPad. For her child to have to endure boredom would be a crime

"Mommy let you use her iPad, you were barely two, and it did all the things we designed it to do; now look at you..."
That little refrain sends shivers up my back every single time. The absolute subtly sinister suggestion that 'yes, this is on purpose' just makes my skin crawl.

Hardest hitting line for me was “and it did all the things we designed it to do” and that’s just brutal. I think when we look at our relationship with technology, and the world in general, it’s vital to remember that people who knew what they were doing actively tried to addict us. We are not blameless in our addictions, but our willpower was actively hacked by people whose actual goal was to make us weaker and more profitable, and we are not as angry about that as we should be.

"He's embodying the Internet. It's not a leader. And yet, we're following it."
I don't know if you realize how fucking hard that line went. Goddamn!

the most threatening line to me is "here's why women never fuck you, here's how you can build a bomb.", it's about how the internet encourages you to be angry or ashamed, and encourage acts of violence. the internet doesn't want you to be happy, it wants you angry, and violence gets clicks. it's a never-ending cycle.
