For me, that funny feeling is just looking around and knowing things are wrong and feeling powerless to stop it. Just that "how did we get here" feeling where everything feels so dissonant and hollow and harrowing. It's just that itch that nothing quite makes sense anymore and yet you get exactly why and how it's all fallen apart at the same time.

"A gift shop at the gun range, a mass shooting at the mall" is one of the most succinct lyrics i've ever heard

“Obeying all the traffic laws in grand theft auto 5” I take this line as GTA is meant to be the escape from the rea world where you can do any crazy evil thing imaginable but our world has gotten so fcked up that we just want some normalcy even in a game about chaos

The general message is "we are so, so fucked, and seeing it coming while everyone acts like it will never happen is killing me."

I interpret that funny feeling is the existential awareness of our own ending, not just individually but collectively.  “The quiet comprehending of the ending of it all.”  All of it.  America.  Civilization.  Our habitable planet.  Our own lives.  It’s not a fear of death… it’s an awareness of the loss of meaning, a loss of future. Pretty sad song and all too relatable.

Four words are slept on so much when people react to or listen to this song.  The line "Loving parents; harmless fun" always hits me hard, because it's something that seems so normal.  People will often say that they're just having some "harmless fun" or that they had "loving parents".  And it's like...hearing those phrases feels off, doesn't it?  Like, you should have loving parents.  That's what a parent should be, at the barest of minimums, is "loving".  And hearing someone describe their parents as "loving parents" kind of forces you to think about the fact that there are parents out there who either didn't love their children or who made their children think that they didn't love them through their parenting.  And "harmless fun"...what is "harmful" fun?  Just saying "harmless fun" implies that there is harmful fun, and that people are having it.  That there are people out there who derive joy from causing pain or suffering to others.
Saying either "harmless fun" or "loving parents", adding a modifier to those words, normalizes that the opposite both exists and is a regular occurrence in society.  ALL parents should be loving, and ALL fun should be harmless.  The fact that it isn't, the fact that it's so normalized to add the modifier, is a reflection on society itself that such modifiers are necessary.
And that's part of the funny feeling.

"20 thousand years of this, 7 more to go" remembering that this was recorded in 2020, during the quarantine, this is actually referring to the climate clock stating that we have until 2028 to fix climate change before it becomes irreversible.

That "funny feeling" to me is the juxtaposition of people living happy lives and going about their day as usual while horrible things are happening everywhere. It's the realization of the ending of humanity as a whole, not just the singular.

I think he's talking about the fall of mankind, not just his own mortality. And the funny  feeling is how nonsensical and far off from what life really is everything has become. The feeling is that everything is just...off. And probably about to end. At this point it's a simulation within a simulation within a simulation within a simulation. There doesn't seem to be a real connection to anything real anymore, however close to that we ever really were. We are further away from understanding the meaning of life (experiencing it fully) than at the beginning.

I take the "funny feeling" of every once in awhile becoming re-aware of the absolute dystopia we have found ourselves in because of capitalism. He also wrote this song during COVID where our isolation only amplified the individualism society has pushed us to for those capital interests. America specifically. We are stuck - economically, politically, socially - to work for capital gains while we are being distracted with 'progress' and 'representation' through things like "Female Coronal Sanders" even though nothing meaningful is actually being done to better our lives. That is why we have a gift shop at the gun range and still have mass shootings at the mall. Along with other distractions like technology, music entertainment, anything. Throughout Inside he gives a nod to how capitalism is destroying the planet, but we can't do anything about it without disrupting the 1%. ("20,000 years of this, 7 more to go;" "the silent comprehending of the ending of it all"). He IS saying we're already dead & we are overdue because we DID cause it. Our planet is dying and we are all going down with it, but our lives as we know it has all been made for it to feel so normal, even though it's anything but. Like Ren says in Money Game 1; "There's no left, no right- in the middle we sleep."

For me that funny feeling is being a spectator to the world, being here and now and having a general “awareness” of what’s going on but having a numbness to the cognizant dissonance that is happening around you.

The "We didn't start the fire" of 2020's

I partially agree that "that funny feeling" is referring to mortality, but not simply personal mortality and death, but the death of culture, of society, of communication, of connection. He talks a lot about greed and the entrapment of consumerism (e.g., "half off at the Gap") and how we are losing ourselves in convenience (e.g., "a book on getting better HAND delivered by a drone"). A lot of the song seems to me to discuss how the work is at odds with itself, is contradictory, and sometimes hypocritical (e.g, "gift shop at the gun range, a mass shooting at the mall.) A lot of lyrics in the song come in pairs like that, which are opposing or seem 'wrong.'

I am here for Bo, but equally as much here for you. You use Bo's art to begin discussions in a very powerful way. I agree with all the recommendations in the pinned comment, but would also add "Welcome to the Internet" as it continues some themes in this song, even though it comes before it in the special ("Inside"). I do think there is value to listening to everything from Inside, in order much like I recommend listening to albums from track 1 to the end (at least the first time), there is art and meaning to be found in the composition of the whole special as there is in each song. I can't wait to follow your journey with Bo!
