In 1963 Texas, a dangerous prison escape sets two very different lives on an unexpected journey. Robert “Butch” Haynes escapes with another convict and soon takes a young boy named Phillip as a hostage. What begins as a desperate attempt to stay ahead of the law gradually becomes something neither of them expected.
As Butch and Phillip travel across the Texas countryside, an unusual bond starts to develop between them. Despite the circumstances that brought them together, the hardened fugitive begins to see the lonely child in a different light, while Phillip discovers a sense of freedom and attention he has rarely experienced before.
Meanwhile, Texas Ranger Red Garnett leads the search for the escaped convict and the missing boy. Assisted by criminologist Sally Gerber and other law enforcement officers, Red follows every clue while trying to understand the man he is pursuing and the complicated relationship forming between Butch and Phillip.
With the authorities closing in, the journey becomes increasingly tense. Trust, childhood memories, freedom, and the consequences of the past collide as a fugitive and a young boy find themselves caught between escape and an uncertain future.
