Ben and Kirsty have lowered their outgoings by £2,000 a month, and reveal why they think the housing market is a scam, and why they think everyone should be looking at this way of living! We get a unique insight into why their choice to live like this makes a lot of sense for them, and how the money saved on conventional housing can be used in other ways.

Further to Ben's comments and maths, here in New Zealand, you pay for a house three times over: the buying cost, double that for the Bank's profits (although at this point, still cheaper than rent); and the third time as you literally have to rebuild the house during a 30 year occupation: new roof, new floors, new wiring, the whole monty, not to mention the fun and games that ensue after an earthquake.
If you're going to own a house, go for small as possible (cheaper rates and maintenance, and insurance etc etc etc). Own less shit, and you'll have less to lose come a Civil Defense episode (we're getting more flooding and landslides these days).

You buy a house for £350k, borrow £300k from the bank. Over the next 30 years you pay back 600-£750k. Therefore it’s a bank asset not yours. Further more, assets should cash flow you every month and not cost you. Instead of paying £1500pm into a property that you’ll never ever own (I’ll get to that bit) I put my money into cash flow assets. Businesses, containers that I rent out, stocks and shares and even more businesses. Everything that cash flows every month.
You never own the house because they tax you on it and that’s increasing, if they fine you for some stupid crap like not wearing a mask they’ll take your asset to pay for it etc.. they’ll constantly change rules until you’ll ’own nothing and be happy’. Housing is a scam, but people will always defend what they’ve invested in. You must invest what you save from being in van life.
