I always wanted to play Snatcher, ever since I was a kid an read about it in CVG where they had a giant picture of Gibson with his head in his lap. Morbid kid after all. Would have been nice if this was included with the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection as a bonus. It's got a Metal Gear in it after all.
Great video with some excellently recorded footage. I didn't get to play Snatcher as a kid despite having access to a MegaCD and then just never got round to it. I finally played it a couple of years ago & finished it and what an adventure it was. I've also played the PCEngine and the Saturn versions as well but the PC88 original and the SD version I've not had opportunity to try yet.
Actually, there’s a second piece of Snatcher content, in the early 2010s Kojima teamed up with Suda51 (of No More Heroes, Killer7, and The Silver Case fame) to make a 7 part audio drama prequel to Snatcher called Sdatcher. Kojima directed it while Suda wrote the script for it. While there was never an official English translation made of it, a couple of years back fans translated it into English via subtitles. While I haven’t personally checked it out (since I still have no idea how to emulate Sega CD games and therefore haven’t played Snatcher yet despite being intrigued by it for years) it’s probably worth checking out if you love Snatcher and are a fan of Kojima and Suda51.
On a somewhat related note, I think it’s worth checking out Suda’s The Silver Case, as I’ve always gotten the vibe that the two are very similar, with TSC likely being a far more surreal game both in terms of story and presentation due to a combination of TSC having a far smaller budget than Snatcher and Suda just having a more cryptic and surrealist writing style than Kojima. You can usually nab TSC on sale on Steam for around $5, and at that price I’d say it’s worth checking out even if you don’t wind up enjoying it. Also, TSC has 2 campaigns, Transmitter and Placebo, that should be played consecutively (as in, play Transmitter chapter 1 and then once you finish play Placebo chapter 1 instead of moving on to Transmitter chapter 2 immediately) since the story’s pacing feels significantly worse if you experience it otherwise.
Wow, what a great video!! You hit the nail on the head multiple times.
The comparison with Policenauts (Snatcher is indeed better), open world games (they suck most of the time), succeeding because it’s a visual novel. Takes me back man, to my first playthrough!
I adore Kojima, this and MGS 1 are my favorite games of his. It’s time to replay it once more.
Fun story: bought the Mega CD CIB a couple of years (15 years or something) ago, when I started my retro game collection. Couple of years later I saw an ad on Marktplaats (a Dutch online market place; I’m Dutch) for the Sega CD version, for just €80. Couldn’t believe it but I jumped on it. And I was lucky, seller was genuine. So I’m the proud owner of both versions. 😁
Through the years I collected more Snatcher items: guidebooks, vinyl OST, multiple cd OSTs. The MSX 2 OST is my favorite, it’s so unbelievably good.
Thanks for a great review and like someone else said, absolutely check out Sdatcher. It’s amazing as well.
The music is so goooooooooood. And I agree, a remake would do absolutely nothing to it. It's best left as is and will just ripen with age, like a good wine.
sadly missed out on snatcher in the SEGA CD days, but years later thanks to emulation I finally got to experience it! it was likely around the time of MGS1 on playstation so I was at least somewhat familiar with Kojima and his early work. but snatcher was quite the experience! I'm probably way overdue for another playthrough, hoping I can find the time to start that soon! I do also have a session of the Saturn version of Policenauts I left hanging that need to get back to, another incredible game from Kojima-san, to be sure.
I have been unsuccessfully trying to find, for a long time, how Japanese fans of the original Snatcher responded to the new contents – mainly the 3rd Act "completing" the story – from the CD-ROMantic version.
It had been something like 5 years between the PC88/MSX version and the PC Engine version, an eternity by contemporary standards, so fans must have had a lot of personal theories about the remaining mysteries of the plot.
As someone who played the Mega CD version first, I like Act 3, but it's arguably far weaker than the rest of the game: less interactive, more linear, much less creative as a video game, and more or less just a big exposition dump. Meanwhile, if you contextualize Act 2 as a proper ending to a game, while it doesn't answer all the mysteries of the plot, it is a pretty satisfying ending – more so like the end of a great TV episode than a movie, with the hope you'll get to experience more investigations with Gillian in that world in several sequels.
I wonder if that 3rd Act answered these five years of anticipation and fan theories, or if it was a bit of a disappointment coming from the excellent pacing of the original game, especially in the way it closed the loop completely on all loose ends and made a sequel starring Gillian kinda pointless.
Just dropping in to say thanks for another superb video. I always enjoy them. Almost makes me want to play Snatcher again. Your channel is one of my favorites. Cheers
