Today class, we take a look at what has come to be known as the "Fake Goth Girl", "OF Goth Girl", "Shien Goth Girl"...they have many names. Have you heard of such a thing? It's an apparent new form of life as goth culture, like every other kind of culture, has become more commodified in NOTHING BUT GOOD WAYS. Do you know about Pinkychu and Drake? Are you aware of their cultural signifiers such as White Monster, dog cages, and black lipstick? What about the weird gross men who continually dehumanize alternative women as "dommy mommies" for money? Or the women who do the same thing? The fetishization of alt women, the evolution of how cultures are maintained, and how data and capital influence both of those two previous things are what we will be diving into today, so get your white monster and make sure you're all comfy in your dog kennel as we go down this rabbit hole together.

its so weird that people seem to think saying things like "step on me" and "mommy" to random strangers somehow doesn't equate to sexual harassment. its like they've rationalized that sexual comments about strangers are ok as long as they sound submissive.

I would almost call it an anti-goth movement at this stage because there is absolutely nothing 'alternative' about conforming to traditional gender stereotypes and pandering to a mainstream audience of predominantly straight men who would call a priest if they encountered an actual goth.

I always thought it was weird how, in pop culture media, "goth girls" were usually depicted as being intimidating and unapproachable, but the "modern" 2026 "goth girl" advertises themselves as being EXTREMELY available, and how that feels sort of pandering to a fantasy of, I dunno, having easy access to "inaccessible" women? Particularly for insecure men who fear rejection?

as a deathrocker, this shits been getting on my nerves because deathrock fashion can be a lot "skimpier" than other modes of goth fashion & the ungodly amount of times ive been called a goth mommy in the last several years has actually made me tone it down & dress in longer dresses/skirts rather than cut off shorts. forcing myself to show less skin because im sick of the objectification - i was fine when people looked at me with disgust & like a freak, but i am not fine with boring men in khakis harassing me to be their goth mommy. 😭

There's no goth men, because it's about fetishizing women. If they paired a goth girl with a goth guy then it wouldn't be a fetish anymore, it'd be two people who share a subculture, have things in common and, who knows, maybe even respect each other.

It's similar to the women who used to bully us for being 'weird' in school but dress whatever is now determined as Alternative because it's popular. And you're like oh this person must have changed if this is the vibe they are embracing! NOPE still incredibly rude putting people down, just dressing whatever is the most popular.

I'm a 32 year old alternative-ish woman, I can admit I'm mainly into the artistic expression of alternative fashion and body-mods rather than the music, I listen to some metal but most of the time I listen to other genres, for this reason I don't really call myself "goth" or "punk" because that is a specific subculture I'm not deeply embedded in. I have tattoos, a septum piercing, wear a lot of black but I'm not a goth, I'm casually alternative and that's fine..
But I'm also not trying to commodify a whole subculture for the sake of views or money, and I certainly don't like being sexualized as a result of this ongoing online 'goth girl' trend. I'm a grown ass woman with tattoos, that doesn't mean I'll lick milk off the floor for the approval of misogynist geeks, yet even I've felt some repercussions of this commodification of goth/alternative aesthetics (especially in gaming spaces).

The sexualization of women in alternative fashion/music has been a problem for as long as it exists, but this online trend feels particularly insulting.

There's a huge difference between embracing your sexuality in response to toxic gender norms and taking over a whole subculture and reducing it to nothing more than a porn category.
One is an empowering reclamation of your body, and the other is just sexism again but in a different flavour.

theyre specifically putting on a "egirl gamer goth" persona. thats why it doesnt feel goth. they want to be as palatable as possible for their audience.

They give me the same vibe as the phrase "everyone is hot but no one is sexy." Their portrayal of goth is so sanitized and perfected that it feels so disingenuous

When we say "you couldn't handle a goth girl" it was never because goth girls are super freaky.

It's because the dudes we say it too wouldn't be able to reconcile the fact that goth women have thoughts... believe in things that run counter to them.

You hit the nail on the head.

They don't want goth women, they want specifically girls they can attach a set of artificial traits to and impose their fantasies upon.

I’m barely alt (I’m a woman who works in an office, heavily tattooed, who looks younger than I actually am) and I’ve seen such a weird uptick in the way men approach me and talk to me. Specifically normie nerds. Truly peak internet brain rot.
