๐ŸŽฅ About This Video

I've kept bees in this forest for 10 years, and watching the trees come down around me has left me genuinely conflicted. In this one I walk you through why that clearing is not the disaster it looks like, and how letting the light back in is bringing the whole woodland back to life.

๐Ÿง  What You Will Learn

You'll see the difference between dense, dark conifer plantation and a thinned woodland that can finally breathe. I explain why blocks of conifers go silent and lifeless, what happens the moment sunlight reaches the forest floor, and how fireweed, flowers, insects, birds and mammals come back once that light gets in. We also get stuck into Himalayan balsam: why the bees love it, why it causes such trouble on steep ground, and how we're clearing it before it takes over. If you're searching for forest beekeeping, woodland forage for bees, planting for pollinators, or how to deal with Himalayan balsam, this one is for you.

โš–๏ธ A clearing that gives something back

They're thinning the conifers and leaving the good hardwoods standing, so it looks far more brutal than it really is. That small change lets the light down to the forest floor and wakes the whole place up. I planted our patch on the woodland edge to put out an invitation to every bit of wildlife that had nowhere to go in the dark plantation next door.
