πŸŽ₯ About this episode

In this episode, I’m chatting with Alex about bees, gardening, wildlife, filmmaking and what it actually means to build a life around the things you love.

We talk about bee-friendly plants, the biggest gardening mistake Alex keeps making, why echiums are such brilliant pollinator plants, and the idea of turning a dark, quiet bit of woodland into a proper sanctuary for wildlife.

🧠 What you will learn

This is a relaxed conversation, but there are some lovely practical lessons in here. Alex talks about plant spacing, gardening with long-term growth in mind, choosing plants that actually help bees, and why a garden can be messy up close but still full of life. We also get into YouTube, creativity, making videos that do not always perform well, and why comments from the community can shape what we make next.

🌱 Gardening for bees and wildlife

One of my favourite parts of this chat is the idea that a garden can be more than something pretty to look at.

It can be a place for bumblebees, honey bees, pollinators, birds, trees and wildlife. Alex mentions echiums as a cracking bee magnet, and we talk about planting for the long term, from flowers for B-roll all the way through to oak trees that might outlive all of us.

🎬 Making videos that mean something

We also talk about the strange balance of being a creator.

Sometimes the video you are most proud of is not the one that gets the most views. Alex talks about filming a quieter, more cinematic beekeeping video with new lenses, and how proud he felt of the finished film, even though the audience still wanted the calm narration they know him for.

That is a good lesson for anyone making things online. You need to challenge yourself, but you also need to listen to the people who keep turning up.
