this game is seriously underrated

The performance issues and some unbalanced aspects of this game have created a sort of contagious bias, leading people to think it's just a bad game. But after finishing it myself, I found it to be incredibly good. I like how the game's story tries to incorporate the concept of Samsara, the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. I really hope that once the developers fix the performance issues, the game will find the popularity it deserves.

I saw this game on Game pass and thought, nothing to lose from trying it. I loved (almost) every second of it. Lost my shit at a few bosses but it's a phenomenal game. Sad how a lot of people will never play it because of a sub optimal launch.

Since Vaatividya won't do it, I'm glad you did.

another absolute banger. dude gave a WHOLE ASS history lesson before getting into the meat. you never miss my guy. thanks for another great lore video to fall asleep to.

What's more interesting is that the CN title isnt WUCHANG at all, it's 明末 (ming mo) which basically translates to "End of Ming (dynasty)".

Never expected this game to be dark asf

Excellent breakdown, especially impressed with your thorough research into the mythological background!
I noticed 2 mistakes made by the English translations though:
- The "Tang Emperor" is a mistranslation of 唐王, which should be translated to "prince/king of Tang", an imperial title granted to one line of Ming princes. So the Tang King Palace was the travelling palace of the King of Tang of the Ming dynasty, and has no relations to the previous Tang dynasty  or its emperors.
- The Duke Liu Cheng'en is a mistranslation of 刘公公, "grandad Liu", which is an euphemism for eunuchs. So Liu Cheng'en is actually an eunuch (some of whom who were deeply trusted by the emperors of the Ming reached very high status and held great power), perhaps a homage to the lone loyal eunuch who committed suicide alongside his liege.

In ancient chinese mythology, the “Feathered People" (羽人) played a roughly similar role to Elves in European mythology & Fantasy in general.
A mysterious class of beings rumoured to serve the gods while also leading lives of their own.

Soon, with the advent of Daoism & Buddhism, and the idea that every being can attain enlightenment & immortality,
the notion of a "special" race of beings as intermediarries between the Divine and the Mortal fell out of favour.
On the other hand, "Feathering" (羽化) would still be used as a term for the transformation entailed by attainment of Immortality.

This game seems to take a "darker" approach at retelling the Feathered People mytheme,
combining actual Chinese mythology and history, with Lovecraftian and modern Fantasy elements. 👍

Just to add another perspective:

Daoist alchemy is often introduced as the pursuit of external elixirs for longevity or immortality (Waidan/外丹), but there’s also the profound tradition of inner alchemy (Neidan/內丹). Instead of focusing on literal substances, inner alchemy uses methods like abdominal breathing, visualization, intentional guidance, Spontaneous Qigong(Zifa Gong/自發功) to refine and improve our internal energy system—the meridian system(經絡系統).

In Daoist practice, our energy body is considered our true body. This subtle energetic form is what continues with us after we leave our physical body. The ultimate goal of inner alchemy is to strengthen and purify this energy body, preparing it for higher spiritual transformation and, ultimately, union with the Dao—the source of all existence.

I'm pleased that we have records like this of the game's original story, before it was reworked for censorship purposes. I actually suspect that the developers take some comfort from that fact, as well.

This video deserves more views and likes. Because i couldn't understand, I was searching for the lore explanation since the game seems to be missing so many elements until the part where Ancient Shu was filled in. Then, i realized the deep cultural mythology behind the scene.  Funny enough, that Taoist was the red flag in my eyes since the beginning xD.

It’s a shame this game is slept upon cause of its rocky release. For me personally it’s one of the best soulslike games I’ve played including those made by Fromsoft.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together.  Actually really incredible you were able to create this, I can't imagine how much time it took.  I really loved playing Wuchang and this video helped tie it all together and help me appreciate it even more.

Ohhh so that's why the ending is called jarful of medicine , you become the medicine.....

This game really needs a sequel. My favorite souls like game

This dude has SEVERAL lore videos for Wu Chang at close to or more than an hour long. There are at least 7 videos by other creators who have “lore” videos less than 5 mins long. I guess we know who understood the story and who is just reading the back of the box.

Great job covering the story, poor Wuchang losing all her family.

I don’t think Duryal was indifferent to the woes of his people. He chose to wait for the perfect moment to restore order. And this was thousands of years later through Wuchang.

In real life Zhang Xianzhong was extremely bloodthirsty as well, he nearly wiped out the entire Sichuanese population
