Can we just take a moment to remember Ray Illingworth who has just passed away aged 89. One of the very few English captains who won a series in Australia. Held in such respect by his team that he was chaired off at the end of the last match in the series after winning it 2-0. A great captain indeed.
Great memories as a kid growing up watching these matches . Loved watching Ray Illingworth bowl - he and Bishan Bedi were two spinners, who had beautiful bowling actions
Marvellous upload that, and with Ritchie looking very sharp indeed, even in a darker shade of jacket instead of his usual The Cream The Bone The White The Off-White The Ivory & The Beige, befitting the skipper of the commentary team and associated responsibility on camera in the Central Missionary Position
I remember Australia touring India in 1969. Under Bill Lawry's captaincy, players like Stackpole, McKenzie, Taber, Sheahan, Chappell, Redpath, and Walters dominated the scene in India.
It's wonderful seeing proto-Richie, developing all the skills he would need to become, not chew much later, the ideal captain of the Central Commentary Team: in colour and under the pearly white, some might say "heavenly", beauty of World Series floodlights. Shuper shstuff.
The 7th test was arranged behind the backs of Illingworth and the players by the tour manager the ineffectual David Clark and Gubby Allen the MCC treasurer, affording Australia an extra chance of retaining the Ashes. So it was not surprising that there was some ill feeling in the England dressing room and great determination to win. It also took sometime for the England players to obtain agreement for an extra match fee. Allen was well known for his dislike of professional cricketers, particularly northern ones. Did he want Australia to win and retain the Ashes? Did he want Illingworth sacked as captain and replaced by Cowdrey?
