I grew up in Adelaide, simply a wonderful place to watch cricket was the Adelaide Oval. Picturesque and a fast wicket, fast bowlers were the order of the day! I remember once queuing up at 4am outside the oval to watch West Indies vs Australia (WSC) one dayer. Once the gates opened, my friend and I ran to square wicket and saw an amazing game. Viv Richard’s was the highlight for me..
Like many from that era, I grew up spending my summers with members of the Ch. 9 commentary team. Richie Benaud was such a top broadcaster with an expert cricket mind bettered by few.
Richie Benaud makes an interesting statement about the 1960 Australian team having more depth in batting. The point is, the last 5 batsmen in the teams that played against the west indies amounted to almost nothing. I am not sure if that was the case in 1979 but in the 80s, having followed the West Indies I saw that the last 5 batsmen did not even bother to hang around for fear of being hit.
One thing that a lot of commentators seem to overlook is how proficient the WI tail-enders were with the bat, or certainly could be. Big Bird, Roberts and Holding could not be underestimated, they were strong guys who could score quickly.
Holding full run up and delivery is one of the best things to see in Sports. Something magical about it. Coming from a non cricket fan. Modern cricket is unwatchable.
The strongest Australian team could be beaten by the West Indies team of late 70s and early 80s. Great Don Bradman had testified their strength. Australian teams and pace bowlers., including Dennis Lilee, Jeff Thomson, Glen Magrath, Mitchel Johnson, failed miserably in Asia., while the West Indians had their strength everywhere
Namaste windies was rhe best team in those days n iam a fan of wi forever they forgot that word defeat n the ablest captain lloyd the best captain of all time
There were two gentlemen, called Sylvester Clarke and Collin Croft., who had conquered fear with fire. The greatest sports story was neither told nor written or recorded properly. From a scared, bruised, battered West Indies cricket team of 1976., humiliated by Australian sledging, abusing, fear, racial tarnishing from both Australian players and spectators without mercy, transformed to a scary, aggressive world champion West Indies side, in all formats. Clive Lloyd , easily the greatest captain in cricket history, along with his two fearless gladiators in Sylvester Clarke and Collin Croft. This was the greatest comeback drama in sports history.Javed Miandad, who fought with Dennis Lilee&co, relentlessly, said in an interview, Sylvester Clarke is the only one, he is afraid of, reiterating a scary incident, involving Sylvester Clarke, in Pakistan, when Miandad had fielded close to Sylvester Clarke, the batter. Sylvester Clarke is perhaps, the most feared cricketer of all time. You can hang him or kill him, but can't scare or defeat him.
