It's amazing that it took so long to figure out it'd be a good idea to have a camera at both ends of the wicket. For all the flack Kerry Packer got, World Series Cricket did bring televised cricket into the late 20th century.
Gary Gilmour was such an amazing talent but he rarely had the fitness to play 2 matches in a row. 9 Wickets in his only Test on this tour and 11 wickets @5.64 in 2 ODIs and yet his career did not go much further. He came in to bat at #3 in a tour match and made a 50 from 12 balls, if he had just prioritized fitness over a beer and a smoke and a plate of hot chips he may have been something special
Really enjoying watching this on a Sunday morning in 2025. John Edrich was a hero of mine growing up. Wonderful nuggety player. Initial thought was that England look short on seam. Some years agoI had to explain to my Polish wife why a mallet is always referred to by me as an Ashley.
Derek Underwood’s 200th test wicket in this match. Great to see another Kent stalwart Arthur Fagg as umpire. First man to score double hundreds in each innings of a three day game. Against Essex 1938. Heard a funny story during game at Canterbury. The club wanted to honour Arthur by naming a part of the ground after him, but the thought of a Fagg end at the St Lawrence was never entertained. Thanks for the upload of this march, which of course finished prematurely due to vandalism. Thanks again an take care.
Test cricket as I remember it, no silly numbers on their backs or tattoo's or off putting advertising slapped everywhere , classy commentary , great to see Thommo and Lillee and batsman who were brave
Slight slip by Richie at the start "Tony Greig won the toss for the third time in a row". It was only his second test as England captain ! He must have included Mike Denness's ill fated win at Edgbaston.
This is an England team I remain very well. Loved watching John Erdrich as an opener he reminded me a tad of my dad. These guys had guts to face the Australian fast bowlers. The well rolled up shirts sleeves looked smart too. You can almost feel the humidity of the day.
This the only match Rod Marsh ever opened the batting in a Test. I can't recall him ever opening in any match for that matter so it was a strange choice. The other opener Alan Turner struggled for form on the tour, must have been a bit humiliating for him to be dropped and replaced by a wicketkeeper with no opening bat experience. Bruce Laird was on that tour but the selectors may have considered him a bit too young to make his debut. I thought Ian Chappell may have opened as he often did in tour matches. Even Ross Edwards had experience as an opener.
What exactly was the question to which Keith Fletcher's batting was the answer? He didn't perform against the Aussies in '74/5, yet was still being given a chance not to perform against the Aussies here!
I was 12 going on 13 in the Summer of 1975. I watched every ball bowled in this test series - on our old black & white TV. I was very disappointed when the Headingley test was abandoned. Great memories.
