Macron recently stated that (as far as France is concerned) the UK would be welcomed back. But he also said there are no a la carte options for the UK: it's either full membership or nothing.

There was no referendum about leaving the single market was there?

As an Irish and European Union citizen I can live, study, work and retire in the UK, Malta, Hungary, Poland, Latvia, Slovenia, Romania, Slovakia, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Austria, Croatia, the Netherlands, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Greece, Portugal, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland.

I can't wait for this day to come.

2016 is quite a l,ong time ago.  We've had 3 general elections since and another is coming in 1-3 years.  People can and do change their minds and they want back in.

This is what the EU should avoid at all costs: if the UK wants to rejoin (which I welcome) the UK should immediately become a full member (including a commitment to join the Euro and reform legislation to EU criteria), otherwise the market is entered and the follow up proces will never end, it would be a repetition off bad cooperation. And sorry; no rebate possible including serious check ups on the financial markets (the City).

Canadian here: I think it is imperative for Burnham to rejoin the EU asap. Yes, good for trade, blah, blah, blah. There is an even more important reason and that is the unity of the United Kingdom. By going back to the EU, it would weaken the whole Scotland separation question. It would solve the whole Irish border situation. And Wales, well if they still choose to go at it alone, good luck with that.

Call me cynical but I think Burnham's motivation to rejoin the EU (in whatever capacity) is to keep the country together. Who wants to be the PM when the country falls apart?
