I'm a beer leaguer in my 60s who's been playing most of my life, and was skeptical about learning something from a young kid. But a few days ago at a public skate, I tried your idea of applying pressure to my heels on my crossovers. First I was amazed at how powerful my strides felt. Then I realized how much better my balance was. That prompted me to increase the cadence of my steps. It just felt so natural and I felt so confident doing it. Another skater even approached me to say, "That was impressive, really impressive". If it looked as impressive as I felt doing it, I understand his reaction. I can't wait to try this in full gear tomorrow at stick-and-puck, and later in a real game. You've taught this old dog a new trick.

As a kid in the 1970s I learned this in hockey camp at the University of British Columbia and spent the rest of my playing days arguing with coaches about shoulder position. I mean EVERY coach tried to change me. UBC had the best coaches, owe them a lot.

I watched this video a few times through, took a lesson from a coach (who was teaching the old method btw), then watched this again and all of a sudden it just clicked. That section where he leans on the boards and shows how to rotate your hips, the knee spread and the shoulder balance really just clicked for me.

Thank you so much for this video. Will watch again to refine!

This is awesome! I think the next video should be off ice exercises to develop quick feet that a player can perform anywhere. Thanks for the insight!!

Packed with the core essense of skating. Definitely one of the best videos I've ever seen.

This feels like a “if you wanna go right, you gotta turn left” thing, I will have to try this!

The hip lean into the turn is big when riding mountain bikes through turns to increase grip, which lets you pump harder to gain speed. If you separate the force the rider applies while leaning into horizontal and vertical components, as you lean your upper body into the turn, much of the force is parallel to the ground, which does resist your body getting flung to the outside of the turn, but it does not direct force down for grip and (if you're pumping the bike to gain speed) additional power. When you lean the hips in but not the upper torso, you resist getting thrown to the outside of the turn, but you keep more weight over the contact patch, so you have more grip which you can use to pump and gain velocity. Fast riders look like they slingshot out of corners.

The cheat code of lifting the toes has never occurred to me. Excited to try it out! Yall are the best. Jonathan (I hope that’s his name!) is rad

Mega tip with the mcdavid style of holding up the stick, super useful. The inside shoulder goes up right away.

I’m pumped to get on the ice this Friday to try it out

What a great explanation! Thank you for this! Will definitely have to show my son and have him try it out!

Tried this... and holy shit... they need to change the teaching method... if you are an advance player, you should have strong ankles already... soo use this... "lift the toes" lolzzz really makes the difference

Game changer. This is the only way to describe the paradigm shift for me !!

Awesome video. You break it down and demonstrate incredibly well.

@robertgoodwin4730 7 months ago

Yes I have seen Connor McDavid rip his short crossovers and really gain speed. I love the breakdown you give of how I can begin to train myself to adopt and change my crossovers. Great vid! Thank you.
