For me..a right handed long bow shooter..if I get even the slightest sleeve to string contact..I get way left hits..I sew up my bow arm sleeves so they're super tight to my whole arm.. Sux..but a gut hit even after a rain is track-able by a experienced dog..rain actually can multiply scent in certain conditions. Our hound tracked a 14-15 HR doe gut hit after heavy rains almost the entire night and found it.
Brother I completely feel you! I literally did the same exact thing 5 days ago. Luckily for me I saw the deer the next day eating and walking around normal. Just a muscle shot but I was devastated too. 💯
Yeah man it happens. I just hit one high when it ducked at 28yds. Trailed it for 300yds and then it just stopped bleeding. It happens and I’ve felt sick all day over it it’s part of hunting. Keep your head up and good luck for the rest of your season.
A bit of advice… I used to ride bulls in the PRCA - early 2000’s… The adrenaline rush I got while climbing up down over the chute would nearly disable me… trick I learned to stay calm and focused - take a big long, slow deep breath in through your nose, hold it for a couple seconds, then purse your lips; slowly let it all out… INSTANT calm for a few moments… enough to get the job done. God bless and good luck.
It happens and it sucks i hit a nice buck a few years ago had great boold at 1st it peetered out to tiny specks the it went straight up a huge revine and crossed a road i looked for a month
Thats Buck fever, I hate it and gotta learn how to control it. Interesting I don't get that while rifle hunting and have shot deer accurately at 250 yds but with a bow and having them step in range the excitement changes.
Its nice to see a hunter feel bad for the deer in a situation like this. i saw Steve Rinella mess up a shot on an elk, all he talked about was the meat hed lose too spoiling and it really pissed me off. anyway i subscribed
Kudos for keeping it real. Gut is a big word. Stomach hit results in death typically within 8-12 hrs. Intestine hits, unless you catch the pyloric artery, won't bleed to death. The deer goes about its business for days until becoming sick w sepsis and dying. Thinking the lack of pass thru was likely due to hitting the far side hind leg. It doesn't only happen w bow, firearms can do the same thing.
don't beat yourself up to bad. happrns to every bowhunter at some point, rather they want to afmit it or not. i've shot deer during gun season that had been shot with a bow earlier and were ptetty well healed up and going good
I have never shot a deer before, but my time is coming to do so. But dude you did well but it sucks with a gut shot that you never intend to happen and that the vultures and coyotes got to it before you could find it. I shoot a compound and recurve but I’m not as good with a recurve like I am with a compound but I’m not a crack shot but I feel comfortable enough with it to hunt. My recurve is a black hunter 50lbs @ 28”. With that i shoot 200 grain heads on a 31.5 inch 400 spine arrow, and my compound bow is set at 61lbs 29” 300 spine arrow using 150 grain heads and the total arrow weight i think was 518 grains so I shoot a fairly heavy arrow, so I sacrifice speed for penetration.I am however doing an upgrade new bow new arrow setup also, as I handed down my Matthews tactic to my youngest lad. But with my recurve I’m shooting instinctive when I shoot it so I got to practice a lot more with it before I feel comfortable to hunt with it. Here in Oz we need 45lbs to hunt small deer and 50lbs for the larger ones. My goal at the moment is to knock over a big red or sambar stag. All the best with your future hunts my friend.
Hog, Fallow, and Chital Deer we need…A minimum draw weight of 45 pounds (20 kilograms), using an arrow fitted with a broadhead having a combined minimum weight of 350 grains (22.5 grams) and at least two blades.
Sambar, Rusa, and Red Deer we need…. A minimum draw weight of 50 pounds (22.5 kilograms), using an arrow fitted with a broadhead having a combined minimum weight of 400 grains (26 grams) and at least two cutting blades.
Like your honesty. You kept it real. You posted an honest mistake and we all learned from it. It didn’t go to waste , nature was fed. Keep doing what you’re doing. 👍🏽👍🏽
Been there, done that! Sucks! What poundage of bow are you shooting? No tab or glove? You held at full draw a long time. I've found if I hold too long, the release is often bad. I've also found the best practice is "stump shooting." Shooting at fallen pine cones, dirt clods, or weed clumps at unknown distances really improved my shooting!
