The story of your kids naming the groundhog was absolutely hilarious

I'm a simple guy, I see Chris upload, I immediately watch.

30:05 it was with Rye, he even says: "I am not sure about the rye necessarily... No! It does! It adds kind of a nuttiness to it!"

He just filled the "coffee" into two different cups.

That groundhog anecdote is pretty funny.

Walter is my new favorite channel lore.

Mocha coffee gets its name from the Yemeni city of Mokha, which was an important trading port for coffee from the 16th to 20th centuries

In Finland during WW2, people even made coffee substitute by roasting dandelion leaves. My granny who lived through it says some people did start saying that they won't need to return to regular coffee once the war is over and international trade opens up again, the substitutes are good enough. Unsurprisingly, everyone did resume drinking actual coffee once the war was over. I don't think people were lying to themselves as much as the substitutes becoming so normalized that people forgot how much better actual coffee is. The overall hardship of living under a war economy probably also meant that it took less to make you feel good.

30:05 it was with rye. He specifically mentions it at 29:5 as adding a bit of nuttiness to it. He filled the same "coffee" into two different cups.

I love how much you and Max are echoing each other in this video 😂 its like the Spider-Man pointing meme, but for Civil War trivia

Mocha coffee gets its name from the city of Mokha/Mukha/Mocha, Yemen and was one of (if not the) main trading port for coffee in the world until its decline in the 19th century. That whole area around the Bab al-Mandab/Mandeb Strait (modern day Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and Yemen) is where coffee originated and, until it was transplanted to the Americas, also where the majority of the world's coffee came from. So I'm not at all surprised that Mocha coffee (which was likely the type of coffee bean, not the modern beverage) already existed back in the ACW.

The one he drank was the same as in the tin. Both was sweet potato and rye, a mixture as he said.

28:49 Love that 😂

This reminds me a fantastic channel called "Townsends" which has a lot of great videos about how people cooked their food in the past, I particularly love their video on how coffee became America's most beloved drink. Would definitely recommend you check them out even though it's not the usual type of history videos you might react to!

Vlogging through History and Tasting History together in one video again. Yay!

One of my great uncles served in WW2 and and his company took three German officers prisoner. The Germans were interviewed by the company commander and he offered them 'Camp Coffee' a chicory extract popular in the UK until fairly recently. Not realising that he knew German, when he served this stuff to the Germans, he overheard one of them tasting the 'coffee' and saying to his comrades 'It would be better to be captured by the Americans if this is what they drink!'

So coffee was to the American Civil War as Tea was to us Brits in World War 2.

Chris, Max just posted one on food during Leningrad in WW2 and it was very interesting! Great video. I enjoy your content.

By the way, he's done videos on hardtac related recipes one from the Civil War and one from old light house attendants.

Edit addition, he has also made videos on other historical military mess hall or ration food, and also did one for a World War II domestic rationing "emergency steak."

It REALLY IS my birthday and our absolute favorite Pastor-Historian Chris uploads a reaction video by my favourite food historian.

How beautiful my BDay turned out to be! ❤🎉🎉🎉

For those of us who have watched this episode of Tasting History prior to Chris’ reaction, we are exempt from the drinking game this time 😄 no need to get as smashed as the fake coffee grounds. Loved watching you react to this episode, Chris!!! You and Max should collab in the future! Oh, and if you want to taste history, you can buy his cookbook, if you haven’t already. And for your next TH reaction, I recommend JFK’s Last Meal for in November.

Stay safe, drink coffee, and I’ll see you at the Battle of Ohio (Who Dey!)
