Fred was a British working class hero, hardworking, dependable, funny, stoic and hard as nails.
His accent is Lancastrian, from the north of england, he was from Bolton so I take it as distinctive to that area.

Wish u watched them in order.
1. Putting up the ladder
2  putting up the scaffolding
3. Taking the chimney apart brick by brick.

Balls of steel doesn't even begin to describe folks like Fred. He was a British institution. I was starting my final year at college when the BBC first broadcast these. It was must-see television.

Fred is a National Treasure. His tv shows are amongst the most viewed. He was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty The Queen and when he passed a statue was erected in his honour

The subtitles can't handle his Bolton accent! - getting his "bosun's chair up" get's subtitled as getting his "Boston churro"!

Don't know if you noticed, climbing that chimney, he's already put up the ladders on both sides, he does that himself, securing each section of ladder at a time.

Fred was an absolute legend. Steeplejacks were the guys you sent to the top of cathedrals  and churches (usually a steeple) and they sort of branched out when very tall chimneys were built a bit later. They are definitely built differently.

Theres a lot of half hour programes, he filmed for the BBC before he died, he was on BBC2 then, l used to watch them every week.
He was a british treasure, loved by many.
He died of cancer, not from smoking, in his 60s, his funeral was filmed and shown on BBC2.
His love was anything steam, he built a steam roller and another smaller engine.
Well worth watching if only in your spare time.
Well done ❤

America had superman England had Fred Dibnah is from Bolton he's a legend RIP FRED DIBNAH
The cameraman is on a lift thats on a vehicle
He also takes down a massive chimney with fire thats a good one to watch

He's also a talented self-taught engineer. The "engine" he mentions at the end is a huge steam traction engine he rebuilt from the ground up. He ended up driving it around on a tour of UK engineering history for another documentary series.

Next, you should watch a video about how he gets the ladders onto the chimney.

It's a bolton accent. (Bolton lancashire, Northern England).

He has a statue in Bolton next to one of his great passions, Steam Engines. He was a friend of my father’s and looked after our factory chimney so I saw him
even before he was famous. A great engineer.

Watch Fred drop a chimney using fire and falling exactly where he wants it to fall. No explosives

The chimney i can see from my kitchen window is one Fred climbed. (India mill, Lancashire).

There has only ever been one Fred Dibnah made by the man upstairs !  Fred did not have a nerve in his body nor any sense of fear ! He did these mental things for many many years and kept us in awe sitting on the edge of our seats feeling faint at the sight of him in such precarious positions ! He is a natural born orator in his inimitable north west of England ( Lancashire) accent ! As a raconteur he takes it to another level while all the time he is just being his natural born self ! No airs, no graces just Fred - Warts and all !! The man was a Legend in his own lifetime and loved by all ! Ironically, it was " The Big C that took him in the end I believe ?  Sadly missed - RIP Fred !

I remember as a child there were hundreds of these chimneys attached to various factories and mills all across Lancashire. There are hardly any left now; Fred Dibnah was responsible for demolishing many of them :)

Quite right, the exceptional height of the chimney stack served two main purposes , to create a powerful updraft helping the boilers to burn a lot hotter to generate more steam to power the looms and yes to help disperse pollution over a wider area. It did also originally feature a 20 ton cast iron crown top but was removed and melted down during WWII and it was also reported that when the chimney was finished all the workers sat down to have a posh dinner at the very top including musicians and after the brandy and cigars the foreman did a lap of honor around the ledge on his bicycle.  A photo still exists of the workers dressed in formal wear raising a glass to the camera . The pulley system that operated on the inside of the chimney that took steeplejacks and everything else up to the top was called a GIN WHEEL ( enGIN )  N TONIC got added  soon after

Chimneys are high for a couple of reasons, one is to get the smoke up above the town not in next doors top window, and also it create a bigger pressure differential top to bottom, so it draws in air harder. More air = more heat = more steam for less coal.

Lancashire Cotton Mills. Cotton fibre (some from the Southern States US) was shipped to Lancashire, where the fibres were mechanically spun and woven into cloth. The chimneys needed to be high to carry the smoke of the coal powered boilers away from the town.
