If Barry Harris ever confused you, this video will clarify what he was actually pointing at — this is the idea that unlocked everything for me. Join the Jazz Guitar Vault to get this lesson PDF for free! Comment "VAULT" below 🤘

Just going out on a limb, maybe leaving, “Everyone gets THIS wrong”, could be interpreted as an invitation to react the very same way you are in this video.

they are called 5432 because that's where they leave the scale and leap starting from the 5th of scale the 5 leaps from five the 4 starts 54 and leaps from 4 etc

Looking at things from different angles is a great way of developing ideas no matter the subject.

Vault. Great lesson once again.  Your pdf material is amazing too.

Vault.
This is a great lesson. Thanks. Really appreciate the simplicity.

Vault. Thanks for all the great lessons and the PDF

Just fantastic Chase 🙏🎸 thanks so much

I think 5432 was simply a way for Barry Harris, the teacher, to get his class of 20 students to have some well-known lines to all play together during the class.

I’ve had success teaching each of the “moves” separately and having students practice approaching each move from stepwise scalar lines. The 5432 numbering helps trigger the leap. It’s very easy to tell a class to “run from 1 to 5 and do the 4 and 3 moves on the way down” compared to describing it as “play stepwise from root to fifth then a play 3-note enclosure surrounding the third followed by a pivot arpeggio.” The latter might be more correct analytically, but the former gets a quicker result.

Vault!

Someone may enlighten me, but I was of the understanding these licks were mostly aimed at pianists to avoid sounding repetitive just playing up and down the Bebop Scale. The way the piano is laid out allows easy access to quickly play scales up and down. These licks act as both dropping off points between solo ideas and also act as codas to finish off a solo. For instance; If you were soloing over the Major Bebop Scale up and down and landed on, say the the Fifth of the scale , it would trigger the 5 lick. This could then allow you to continue soloing on that scale or change to another.

Issac raz has some great ideas about this!

I bet Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Larry Coryell, Al Di Meola nor Barney Kessel knew what this Barry Harris thing is 😬🙄

That one must be the best of all your lessons so far! Instead of learning 10s of licks, here is the DIY toolkit. I love the 9 EJPs. When I decide to make a combination of only four different ones, it is already about 3000 possibilities (combining the 9, it is roughly 350.000 and with repetitions, it is mathematically 100s of millions...). We won't be able to remember 3000 licks, but with the EJPs we may create any of them almost on the fly... Years of trials (and errors...) are now waiting me. Thanks!!!  Should I still type VAULT?

0:11 that’s Isaac Raz, gave you a long shpeal in the comments on the follow up video to this. Go check out Isaac and hit him up about anything Barry. He’s the real deal and he is an amazing pIanist.
