This is one of the most elegant approaches to teaching improvising over a II-V-I I've ever seen. Nice one Chase!

I'm primarily a blues player (70 years old) getting ready for a jam with some jazz players. I've been a noodler in jazz for years, but I've watched a couple of your videos recently, Chase, and you've opened my eyes like no one else. I'm still a raw beginner in jazz, but I feel confident I can play melodic lines. We shall see. Thanks so much.

This is how students should approach ii-V-I’s. Great lesson brother 🙌

I'm have no licks and no vocabulary. So pure mastery matters. Thanks for this.

The v chord is embellished, altered before resolution. If altered play melodic minor scale a 1/2 step higher than the root of the dominant chord. You can’t play a mixolydian scale across an altered dominant chord. This sounds more complicated than it really is. The d minor chord, just play the Dorian scale over it. To jazz it up, keep lines simple and add enclosures. Sing lines across progression and add those notes to your instrument. That’s my procedure

The ability to teach is a gift and a skill.... Thank you for sharing your insights.

This explanation has helped me more than anything else I've watched on improv, man. You're killing it! Thanks for the lesson.

This is very powerful. It's equally abstract and literal at the same time. This is a magnus opus of the ii-V-I as one who's constantly scouring the web for "licks". You're an incredible teacher. Thank you. I will join and promptly reward with the meager amount in comparison to what you deliver. In the democracy of knowledge age and availablity of aquiring it, the new emphasis will be to limit myself to those that are providing the absolute best integration of teaching with practical application. Everything I've see of yours fits!

RENE THOMAS 's tune " MEETING " is a very interesting and accurate illustration of your II - V - I tuto ! Thanks to share !

A wonderful approach! It would have been nice if some of my music teachers had used this concept back in the day. Thank you!

I get it! You have a great method for teaching. I have been playing over 40 years, and teaching for many as well. I’m finally starting jazz. I ‘know’ it doesn’t have to be complicated…. it’s just about making music. Your method makes that very possible Chase! Bravo!

Excellent lesson Chase, it’s like you ‘reverse engineered the II V I
It’s good to know the landing spot before you jump, and you’ve helped with that in this lesson.
Cheers 🍻

This same concept can be applied to any progression to focus in on the spacing and playing notes over that one chord your are working on. Super awesome way to learn improvising. Instant subscribe.
